A really sweet sapphic romance, She Gets the Girl follows Alex and Molly, two vastly different girls who try to help each other in their respective love lives, only to realise maybe they want something different than they initially planned.
I loved both of them, but Alex stands out as the headstrong, ‘other side of the tracks’ kind of girl, someone who has experienced a lot and been forced to grow up before she should have. She’s like a whirlwind whenever she comes into a scene, causing momentary chaos and often unsettling Molly, before dashing back out again. Alex’s ex is off on the road, touring, and Alex needs a way to show her she’s serious about love and not flirting with every woman who crosses her path.
Enter Molly. Molly is so different from Alex; shy and awkward, maybe a touch coddled by her mother, Molly’s self-admitted best friend. At times she veers towards being a bit too judgemental, but as Alex helps Molly plan how to ask out her crush, Cora, Molly changes a lot and learns to look beyond first impressions.
Both learn and grow from each other, and it makes for a really engaging story, especially as Alex takes Molly through a five-step plan, all with the goal of helping Molly get the girl. Although both are apprehensive about spending more time in each other’s company, I liked the way they clicked together. They really do help each other develop, and to become generally better people, and their friendship helps them see the value in themselves, too. It’s a wonderful arc, and really fits that New Adult late teens/early twenties bracket.
The only thing that just annoyed me a little was how flat the other girls in this were, especially Cora and Natalie, Alex’s ex. It becomes a bit transparent how both are only there to contrast with the main characters, rather than being fully fleshed out.
Other than that though, again this was a sweet, lovely college coming-of-age with an adorable romance at its core. Definitely a book to give you the warm and fuzzies.
