As I had a review up earlier, I thought for Blogtober Day 12 I’d head back to Jenniely’s excellent website and take another look at the prompts there. This was quite hard to find a few of these covers – it feels like ‘autumn’ isn’t something on a lot of the covers for the books I’ve read, but I did manage to find five that give me that autumnal feeling.
Favourite Autumnal Book Covers

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

Something about this cover just makes me think of autumn – and specifically this cover, from Hodder & Stoughton. I think it’s partly the colours, but the landscape, the colour of the grass as well as the way those leaves are clinging to the trees.

The Man With No Shadow by Bonnie Quinn
Genre: Horror

There’s something about the way the woods are on this cover that makes me think of the far end of autumn, as nights get even colder, trees are completely bare and we’re heading into winter. There’s something here about the way the shadows stretch out too, it feels like a cold night rather than a warm one.

Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick
Genre: Horror

The colours, the looming school, all contribute to the autumn feel of this. Autumn in the UK = back to school, and can you imagine heading towards that sight every day during the autumn months? Like Very Secret Society above, it’s the grounds that give off that autumn vibe, with that kind of dusty orange and yellow colour across them.

Halloween Season by Lucy A. Snyder
Genre: Horror

How that cover not scream anything except spooky season – the giant pumpkin, the trick or treaters lining up outside…

Bone Harvest by James Brogden
Genre: Horror
Published: May 12th, 2020
I love this cover – the use of orange and green, the skull lying in wait, it carries a threatening vibe in the best way and makes it clear whatever ‘harvest’ is referred to in the title is going to be a dark one.
What are some of your favourite autumnal book covers? Do you agree with these choices, or think these totally don’t at all make you think of autumn? As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
