Volume 2 solidifies why it was a good choice to go back and reread this. Here, we’re introduced to Marko’s parents, who, as diehard in their beliefs as they are, can’t quite comprehend why their son has left behind such a ‘good woman’ as their intended daughter-in-law, and run off with the enemy. As with volume 1, we get some tender moments, some WTF moments, and more running, as the new parents try to keep out of reach of those who see them and their child as a threat.
Including Marko’s ex, who joins up with The Will, throwing yet another character into the mix who would rather see Hazel dead. There’s more layers to the characters here, slowly getting peeled back as we find out more about them, more about the war, more about the various characters at play.
Artwork is gorgeous, definitely the kind where you pick up more details the more you look, and balances beauty and horror so well, turning even totally messed up scenes into something gorgeous, as we find out more about this small family it’s impossible not to love.
What I really love about specifically rereading it, too, is seeing all those little details laid out and the way the story is building up, as well as the sense of this vast galaxy where every inch has, in some way or another, been impacted by a senseless war.
I can’t reiterate this enough – if this has somehow passed you by until now, Saga is well worth picking up, and if it’s been a while since you’ve read it, the reread is just as enjoyable as the first time around.
