#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.
Ah, non-fiction. Do you read much non-fiction? I quite like dipping into it, especially when I find subjects that really catch my interest. There is, of course, a huge range out there, with every topic under the sun covered by the term ‘non-fiction’. So, here are five of the books on my TBR, and the reasons I’m interested in reading them.
#5OnMyTBR 6th November:
Non-Fiction
Bi: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality by Julia Shaw

Format: Hardback
Genre: Science
Published: May 1st, 2022
Why I Want to Read: I picked up this book as soon as I spotted it in a local queer bookshop, and at this point it’s been sitting on my shelf for way too long. I want to read because I’m bi, and because it looks like it’s going to have a lot of fascinating information about my own sexuality. In general, I’m intrigued by queer non-fiction, as I think it can often be very eye opening. Is it any surprise I want to read this?
We Can Be Heroes by Paul Burston

Format: ebook
Genre: Memoir
Published: June 1st, 2023
Why I Want to Read: The story here covers such a huge part of our history – not just queer history, but British history, and it’s so incredibly recent, we are lucky to be able to hear from the queer folks who lived through this period today. If you’re around my age, it’s likely you never heard any queer history in school in the UK, and learnt more outside it instead. Books like We Can Be Heroes are so important for understanding what our elders lived and are still living through.
How Broadway Works by Sharon Grace Powers

Format: ebook
Genre: Entertainment
Release Date: December 15th, 2023
Why I Want to Read: I love musicals, and I’m absolutely fascinated by them – I love reading about how musicals came to be or the history behind them or what inspired them and so on, but I actually don’t know a whole lot about how it works! This looks like it’s going to be a great insight into that side of things.
Meet the Georgians by Robert Peal

Format: Paperback
Genre: History
Published: July 8th, 2021
Why I Want to Read: I have to admit, over the last few years I’ve grown more and more interested in the Georgian period – what a fascinating time in British history. This is partly inspired by my growing love of Regency Romance, but even outside that, I’ve always loved books, especially Fantasy, set in and around this era, and I really do want to learn even more about it.
Gay Aliens and Queer Folk: How Russell T Davies Changed TV by Emily Garside

Format: Hardback
Genre: Entertainment
Published: September 21st, 2023
Why I Want to Read: I wanted this book anyway, but then I was lucky enough to go to a talk Emily Garside presented at my local Waterstones, so now I have a shiny signed copy to read. And from her own words, the timing of this book’s release was fortunate but coincidental. I love Davies’ work and I love how integral queerness is to it, though I admit I haven’t watched everything he’s done, but enough to love his non-Doctor Who stuff as well as the Doctor Who stuff that first introduced me to him (and Doctor Who!). I’m super excited for the new series, super excited to read this book, and super excited to catch up on Davies’ work that I’ve missed (if you haven’t already, go watch Years and Years and It’s a Sin, two shows I will scream from the rooftops about because they’re absolutely bloody fantastic).
I’m really excited to dig into these books, and I think one of my goals for 2024 might be to try and read more non-fiction – I have so many great titles on my shelves that I really need to get to. What are some non-fiction books you’re looking forward to? Have you read any of these, or do any catch your eye?
