#5OnMyTBR: Picture

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

This was a really tricky one – turns out I don’t have many books at all that are about pictures (at least, not from a glance over the titles!), I don’t have picture books and currently I have no graphic novels on my TBR. So I’m stretching the definition of ‘picture’ just a little – after all, it might be ‘old fashioned’, but I remember as kids we went to the pictures when we were taking a trip to the cinema. So there’s a few movie themed books on the list, too.

Nightmare Movies: Horror on Screen Since the 1960s by Kim Newman

Format: Paperback
Genre: Non-Fiction – Horror – Film
Published: April 18th, 2011

Why I Want to Read: Oh I really need to bump this up the TBR. It’s been sitting on my shelf for ages. I loved Newman’s take on Dracula, but have yet to read his non-fiction. This seems like a good chance to dive into some film history, which is something I always love doing.

A Portrait in Shadow by Nicole Jarvis

Format: ebook
Genre: Historical Fantasy
Published: May 2nd, 2023

Why I Want to Read: I really like historical fantasy – the two genres just really blend well together, and this one centres around the art world and a woman fighting against an all-male group with power over art and architecture. It just sounds like one of those books where if I like it, I’ll likely love it.

Gay Aliens and Queer Folk: How Russell T Davies Changed TV by Emily Garside

Format: Hardback
Genre: Non-Fiction
Published: September 21st, 2023

Why I Want to Read: Yes, I am stretching picture to include TV too – this book deserves all the exposure it can get, and I haven’t even read it yet. But I am so excited to do so! I love Russell T Davies, I’ve loved every series of his I’ve seen, and I adore Doctor Who, and Emily Garside is pretty great too!

The Making of Horror Movies: Key Figures who Established the Genre by Jennifer Selway

Format: ebook
Genre: Non-Fiction – Horror – Film
Published: June 14th, 2021

Why I Want to Read: Yep, more about horror films. I just really love reading about them, in all forms, and this looks to be an interesting exploration of the various key names and perhaps lesser known names involved in horror films.

Blue Light of the Screen: On Horror, Ghosts, and God by Claire Cronin

Format: ebook
Genre: Non-Fiction – Horror – Memoir
Published: October 13th, 2020

Why I Want to Read: For similar reasons to the other non-fiction books about horror films I’ve included here. And I love that this is a more personal take on the genre, which should make it some pretty interesting reading!

Well, what do you think? I know I stretched the meaning of ‘picture’ a little but I really struggled to match up my books with this one! As always, if you have read any of these, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
