Celyse is a princess, part of the most powerful family in the faerie realm, though it’s her twin sister set to inherit the crown. Something has always drawn Celyse towards the portals, and she discovers a hidden one. allowing her a glimpse of a young man in the human world. Julio, the son of a powerful curandera, assumes the beautiful young woman visiting him every night is a ghost like the others. But when Celyse is confronted by a suitor and her life threatened, she questions everything she knows and believes, and there’s only one person she can turn to for help. She lands in Julio’s bedroom, injured, telling him both the faerie and human realms are in danger.

I enjoyed this book well enough, but Celyse started to annoy me just a little. There just wasn’t anything hugely interesting about her, except faerie princess who likes humans. I think I found her as a character frustrating and a bit one-dimensional, and there’s definitely a certain “not like the other girls” vibe coming from her.

I did enjoy reading it though, and it did an interesting enough job at keeping me guessing what was going to happen next. I think largely fae/fairies have been done in so many different ways by this point, this book needed something a little stronger to stand out. I will admit though that Garcia’s prose is enjoyable to read and the writing style made it feel like it flew by.

Despite the fact I wasn’t impressed overall with the book, it hasn’t put me off reading more from Rose Garcia or even continuing with the series, largely because Garcia’s writing does make things engaging and gives the sense of wanting to find out what happens next.

So yeah, this one is a little hit or miss, but as usual with books where I find I just don’t connect to it, I’d strongly suggest checking out other reviews as well, as it’s one of those books I can imagine others liking much more strongly than I did.
