#5OnMyTBR: Short Read

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

There will be a Blogmas post coming a bit later today, but I thought this week’s #5OnMyTBR was a great chance to highlight some books on my TBR that come in at less than 200 pages.

#5OnMyTBR December 11th: Short Read

Enchanted Wales: Myth and Magic in Welsh Storytelling by Miranda Aldhouse-Green

Format: Hardback
Genre: Non-Fiction – Mythology
Published: October 5th, 2023

Why I Want to Read: My book buying ban does not apply when I go to book events, and I was lucky enough to attend an event for both this and The Folklore of Wales: Ghosts. Both authors were excellent, and I’m so happy to have these two books, signed, on my TBR. I’m still fascinated by Welsh myth and folklore, and the different approaches to it, and from the discussions at the event it seems Aldhouse-Green ties in the stories in Welsh myth to archaeological finds, so that’s really exciting.

Wild Spaces by S.L. Coney

Format: ebook
Genre: Horror – Coming of Age
Published: August 1st, 2023

Why I Want to Read: I think I might read this one next year, actually – it definitely fits really well with one of my musicals prompts. It definitely sounds intriguing, and horror is one of those genres where novellas can be incredibly effective. I love the way this seems to mix Cosmic with Coming of Age, and I’m excited to see how well the writer pulls it off.

Her Princess at Midnight by Erica Ridley

Format: ebook
Genre: Romance – Historical
Published: November 10th, 2023

Why I Want to Read: A sapphic regency fairy tale retelling – yes please! I loved Ridley’s The Rake Mistake and by this point there’s a few of her books I have on my TBR, but this one I am especially excited for.

Treasury of Folklore, Seas and Rivers by Dee Dee Chainey and Willow Winsham

Format: ebook
Genre: Non-Fiction – Folklore
Published: March 1st, 2021

Why I Want to Read: I just love reading about folklore, and I love exploring more ‘lesser known’ folklore, or tales from around the world. And water-based is kind of fascinating, with the different ways people view the seas and rivers.

The Dark Side of Alice in Wonderland by Angela Youngman

Format: ebook
Genre: Non-Fiction – Historical
Published: April 5th, 2021

Why I Want to Read: There’s so many different ways to view some of these classic children’s stories, and I love seeing darker interpretations of things like this and Peter Pan. This one had me intrigued from the moment I saw the title.

These books all look so good, and honestly, I’m so excited for the New Year when I can sit down and plan out my next reading challenges. Will absolutely have to try and fit some of these on there!
