#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.
There’s a lot of books I could have picked out for this – I could have been really lenient with myself and gone for books set in the States, or even England, Scotland, Ireland…instead, I decided to focus only on books set outside those countries. For the fantasy ones, I’m highlighting books that take direct inspiration from countries that aren’t the UK or America, etc. So, here’s 5 books from my TBR, set in foreign countries.
#5OnMyTBR February 19th: Set in a Foreign Country
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Published: January 31st, 1993
Country/Area: (Inspired By) Poland
Why I Want to Read: I’ve heard good things about this series, and I really enjoyed the first season of the Netflix show. It made me keen to actually dig into this, though it’s been on my TBR for a while as there’s other fantasy series’ I want to continue with/finish ahead of this.
Paris by Starlight by Robert Dinsdale

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Published: August 20th, 2020
Country/Area: France
Why I Want to Read: This book sounds magical and beautiful – I’m hoping it lives up to that magical cover. It seems like it maybe has the kind of historical and fantasy blend I tend to really enjoy, too.
We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Published: January 19th, 2021
Country/Area: (Inspired By) Arabia
Why I Want to Read: I really loved We Hunt the Flame, and I really need to finish this duology – this book looks gorgeous, and I except I’ll really enjoy returning to this world. Faizal is definitely a very talented writer.
Pyotra and the Wolf by Elna Holst

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Published: February 15th, 2021
Country/Area: Russia
Why I Want to Read: This fairy tale retelling sounds really intriguing, and I haven’t read much Russia (or Eastern European, either) fantasy, so it’s definitely something that’s on my radar to read more of. And as a bonus, this one is queer, too.
Witches by Brenda Lozano, Translated by Heather Cleary

Genre: Magical Realism
Age: Adult
Published: July 21st, 2020
Country/Area: Mexico
Why I Want to Read: I was intrigued by this one because it seems like something different, with a really intriguing premise. I also want to read more books in translation, as it’s a good way to read books outside the US & UK. Hopefully I can finally get to this one this year.
Have you read any of these? I’d love to hear your thoughts if you have!
