2024 Reading Challenges Update #4

It’s that time again – well, almost. I’m actually doing this a little in advance, as I keep pushing to get posts scheduled a little early. So far, April hasn’t been my best reading month, but there’s been some other things happening that have curtailed my reading time a bit. Hopefully May’s update will have a bit more!

2024 Reading Challenges / Update #1 / Update #2 / Update #3

Goal: 26/70 (+4)

Disney Reading Challenge 2024
6/40 (+1) Prompts Completed

Read

Baloo – Man, That’s What I Call A Swinging Party! – a book with a celebration or party

After DNF’ing the book I originally picked out for this prompt, I read An Improbable Season. It…truly wasn’t that much better than the book I DNF’d, but for different reasons. I’m starting to think Regency just can’t be done well in YA. Still, another prompt down – just 30-odd more to go!

Currently Reading

Stitch – Blue punk buggy! No punch-back! – a book with a blue cover or spine

I knew immediately the book I wanted to use for this prompt as soon as I saw it, and I really am enjoying Gay Aliens and Queer Folk a lot, as it presents a wonderful insight into the career of Russell T Davies.

Gaston – As a specimen, yes, I’m intimidating – a book that intimidates you

This is not the first time I’ve picked up The Mabinogion, but it’s the first time I’d tried it on audio. It is intimidating, and can be a little tricky to follow, but I’m hoping the audio – which is narrated wonderfully – helps somewhat.

Books to Read: The First Days, Whale Fall, The Wicked Ones

Musicals Reading Challenge 2024
5/24 (0) Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

Oliver! – Consider Yourself – Found family

I’ve not long started reading Crowned a Traitor, it’s all right so far but a little slow going for my tastes. I’m hoping it picks up soon.

Books to Read: Shakespeare, The Furies, Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, the Fool and the Dead

Avengers Challenge!
5/6, 1/5 Bonus (+3) Prompts Completed

Read

Hulk – Science Bros #2 – anything with a realistic science plot, a nonfic science book, something about radiation, OR something with a character who can’t control their temper

I picked out ‘nonfic science book’ for this, as it seemed the perfect opportunity to read The Science of Marvel. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought – I think it’s likely more suited to more science-minded folks, but it was interesting enough.

Hawkeye – Deaf characters, characters who do archery, or a character who is a total “dad friend”

True Biz was my most recent audiobook, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a thoughtful, well written novel about events at a school for the deaf, and the addition of small snippets explaining ASL or parts of history, etc, were incredibly informative.

BONUS: Scarlet Witch – Magic, woman scorned, witches, twins…

I wasn’t hugely impressed with this one, but it was a semi-decent read – The Once and Future Witches feels like it can’t decide the tone it wants. But when looking for a book for this prompt it felt like a good choice for it.

Books to Read: To Steal a Heart, A Radical Act of Free Magic, Kissed

Barbie Reading Challenge
6/17 (0) Prompts Completed

No progress on this one this month – but I am catching up with the other challenges so I’ll hopefully be able to read more for this in May!

Books to Read: Ace of Spades, A Hunger Like No Other, Love That Journey for Me

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
13/24 (0) Prompts Completed

As of right now, I’m still trying to catch up with the other challenges before picking up this one again – by this point, I’ve definitely realised I’ve tried to tackle too many for this year! Hopefully though I can continue on with this one soon or at least try and use the books here on some other challenges so I still get to them relatively soon.

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, Hexed

I definitely think this month is a bit of an odd one – my March update was late, and my April one is now early, so it’ll be interesting to see if it levels out a bit more for May! How did your reading go in April? Did you keep on track, or slide off a little? (We’ve all been there, right?)
