#5OnMyTBR: Authors’ Debuts

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

I love coming across debut novels – I think it’s so exciting to get an insight into a writer as they’re just starting out. And it feels like there are constantly excellent debuts coming out, in a variety of different genres! Most of these are newer books that have come out recently, but the first one is an older one (2021) that is on my TBR, and I definitely think still deserves to be highlighted, even if it’s not from a ‘current’ debut.

#5OnMyTBR June 24th: Authors’ Debuts

Ace of Spaces by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Genre: Thriller
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 1st, 2021

Why I Want to Read: This one has been sitting on my shelf for a long time – it’s one of those books that just feels like it’s completely made a home on my TBR, but it is coming up in a reading challenge so I’ll likely read it very soon! I like some mystery/thriller books, though I’m very fussy with these, though this one sounds different and definitely explores some important themes. I know it’s a largely well regarded book, too.

Glasgow Boys by Margaret McDonald

Genre: Contemporary – Literary
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: May 2nd, 2024

Why I Want to Read: This one grabbed my attention instantly from the title and cover, and diving a bit deeper the themes the book explores really speak to me – identity, community, and the Scottish working class. It focuses on two young boys from the care system, one who has just started a nursing degree. Really looking forward to digging into this!

Songlight by Moira Buffini

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024

Why I Want to Read: This one instantly captured my attention with the title alone – I think one word titles can be really effective when they’re well thought out, and this one definitely is. Start-crossed lovers, a world ruled by men, and a gift of songlight…definitely sounds exciting!

Medici Heist by Caitlin Schneiderhan

Genre: Historical – Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: August 6ht, 2024

Why I Want to Read: This is the newest addition to my TBR, and how could I resist? Historical heist adventure with a team of variously skilled individuals. It sounds like so much fun! Fingers crossed it lives up to expectations.

Saints of Storm and Sorrow by Gabriella Buba

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: June 25th, 2024

Why I Want to Read: This has so many elements I love – it’s doing something different to the ‘well known’ medieval European inspired fantasy, it features a bisexual nun, and themes of colonization. I love how writers are looking at history and present day issues through fantasy, and it’s such an excellent medium to explore these as well as highlight the impact to people who might not be so familiar. Can’t wait to read it.

Are any of these on your TBR? Or have you read them? What are some author debuts you’re looking forward to reading?
