Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
As soon as I spotted this week’s topic, I knew the exact book I had to talk about. It’s not the best book ever, but it’s a recent read and I loved every single second of it. It’s also a fair bit off-the-wall, and totally not for everyone, which is kind of why I wanted to do this post about this book, because if there’s one person who reads this and thinks “I need to check that out”, then that’ll make me very happy indeed. And please let me know if that’s you!
Please note, due to the book being discussed, this post is…a little bit NSFW and is best read by an adult (18+) audience!
Top Ten Things I Loved About
Jacked Up

1. The Cover
How could I not love that cover? The Jack-in-the-box staring wistfully at the two skeletons, the blood dripping off the title – the cover really does give a solid idea of what you’re getting into here, and it stands out. What more could you want?
2. The Blurb
Okay, specifically this line, which quite honestly is what prompted me to pick up this book, I really couldn’t resist – Some people kill for fame and fortune. I’m killing for the chance to bang my Jack-in-the-box.
3. Sentient Object Romance
This book felt kind of unique. I’m not saying I know all the romances out there, but I honestly haven’t seen a sentient object one (except that door one that went viral?) and this is the first one I’ve read. Considering it starts out as a sentient Jack-in-the-box, so far my experience has been pretty damn good!
4. The Content Warnings
Honestly, I always think it’s great when authors include TW/CW in their books, but with this Nova has done something truly special. Even the content warning page was a pleasure to read – it covered the key points, and let me know exactly the kind of book I was in for. As well as mentioning the sort of things a reader might need to prepare themselves for, it includes some other elements of the book that had me giggling before I’d even got to the story. Which brings me to…
5. Confetti Cum
Brilliant. But also…
6. Interesting Anatomy
His dick is a spring. Or he has a spring for a dick? Either way, genius!
7. A Compelling Story
Honestly, Nova has crafted a compelling story to go alongside everything else – and it all serves the themes she’s laid out. It’s not overly complicated, but it’s so fun to follow.
8. Jack
I adored Jack. To the point as soon as I finished reading I realised I had finally completed a prompt that had been left empty all year – favourite book boyfriend.
9. Complicated Family Dynamics
This isn’t all fun and games – our plucky heroine also has to deal with her creepy, pervy stepfather, and a mother she deeply loves, but who is very ill and flawed (see: creepy, pervy husband). Melody navigates this while mourning the loss of her grandmother, the only family member she actually liked. Sometimes, it’s the most off the wall books that can best tackle the realistic, darker side of everyday life.
10. The Ending
I can’t say much more except the ending thrilled me to pieces; it was a perfect way for this to end.
So, there we go – ten things I loved about Jacked Up! Please let me know if I’ve convinced any of you to pick this up!
