Top Ten Tuesday: Posts I’ve Written That Give You the Best Glimpse of Me

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

For this one, I’ve pulled from a few different places. Firstly, from Divination Hollow, the horror review website I run with a team of contributors. I’ve written a lot of pieces there that I’m really proud of, and would be great to get more eyes on. I’ve also written for Ginger Nuts of Horror on some issues in the horror community, and lastly, I went way, way back in my posts for this blog, and pulled some older posts that, again, feel like it would be good to get seen a bit more. I think a few show the ‘editor’ side of me coming out just before I started editing, and as I was getting into it more and more! I hope you enjoy.

Top Ten Posts I’ve Written That Give You the Best Glimpse of Me

Divination Hollow

First Kill Deserved More

I wrote this two years ago, around the time it was announced First Kill would not be returning after the first season – it was initially going to be a defence of the show and it’s cheesiness, why it’s important to have this kind of representation, and where it sits in terms of paranormal dramas, but it ended up being about the disappointment of its cancellation, and that feels particularly relevant now in the wake of the news about shows like My Lady Jane and Star Wars’ The Acolyte, among many others.

Writing Advice: Editing Dos and Don’ts

This is much more recent, and one I initially started writing to put up on my own editing page (it will be put on there at some point), but I also thought it might be useful to have it as an article on DHR.

PIHM: Doctor Who, Cardiff, and The Gallifrey Cabaret

As part of Pride in Horror Month, I took the opportunity to not only review the excellent The Gallifrey Cabaret, but lightly dive into the history of Cardiff in relation to Doctor Who, shortly before the 60th anniversary specials last year. And as promised in the article, the next time LGBTARDIS landed in Cardiff Bay, I was there, once again loving every bloody second of it.

On Heritage

At one point, I was getting a little frustrated with the way ‘heritage’ felt like it was being used online and by writers, especially, and this came out.

Thinking Beyond ‘Women in Horror’

This is another Pride in Horror Month post, but from 2021, and sadly these same issues remain, in horror and beyond. But I’m proud of this one.

Ginger Nuts of Horror

The Bear in the Room, Choosing the Bear

Jim over at Ginger Nuts asked if anyone wanted to contribute to a series “The Bear in the Room”, focusing on issues in horror after the social media question “would you rather meet a bear in the woods or a man”. This was my contribution.

Unwrapping Words

The Value of Feedback

Going all the way back to 2016, I talked a little about getting feedback as a writer and how crucial it is, after I had just joined the online writer’s group, Scribophile.

How Not To Introduce Characters

This one is from 2017, but I still think it’s a good explanation of show, don’t tell, in terms of characters.

Thoughts on Italics

Ahead to 2019 now, and more writing opinions, this time on italics, how they’re used, and why I mostly just really dislike them!

No Killer, No Filler

And finally, sticking in 2019, a little explanation on killer and filler words, and why it’s worth keeping an eye out for them in your writing.

It’s actually been really interesting going back and looking over old posts, and I can confidently say I am really proud of these ones, for various reasons. I think in each one I’m saying something worthwhile, and I hope others find that, too! And it feels like there’s a little something for everyone here.
