This was fun! This book has been on Want to Read shelf for so long, and I finally grabbed it because of a recommendation based on needing something with ‘quest’ in the title. I’m really glad I went for this.
Jig is a goblin, and when he and his pet fire-spider are taken captive, he’s dragged along with a group of adventurers searching for the Rod of Creation. Along the way, Jig comes to understand more about the adventurers he’s with, the world outside the dungeon, and the place he calls home.
The audiobook I listened to was a full cast audio, and it worked really well, especially for the more dialogue heavy scenes. I’m usually a fan of these kinds of audiobooks, and Goblin Quest was no exception. The voice acting and narration were great, and really emphasised the underlying emotions of any scene at a particular time. Especially effective for the humorous moments.
And this book is pretty funny. Hines utilities various fantasy tropes for the humour, particularly from things like Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons. Jig is a very unlikely hero, but he makes for an excellent one, with a dry, unintentionally witty voice and a wide-eyed wonder once he emerges from his usual ‘home base’. I especially loved a particular scene where the adventurers find themselves beneath the sky, staring at trees, and Jig asks how many types of trees there are, having never before seen one in his life.
The humour works and never feels mean spirited; it comes very much from the situations these characters are in, rather than encourage you to laugh at the characters.
If you’re looking for something funny that treats the fantasy genre with a lot of love and affection, I recommend this, and I highly suggest checking out the full cast audio, either to first experience Goblin Quest or as an excuse to revisit it.

Yes! In the right writer’s hand it can work really well, and definitely gives it a bit more of an interesting flavour!
