Monday Moods: Magical

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

Magic! I love books featuring magic, whether it’s a light dusting or full of it, it’s fun to sink into stories featuring abilities or witches or spells and other forms of magic weaved in. It’s another versatile one, too – you can have magic in almost any setting!

This Week, I’m in the Mood For Something…
Magical

The Wedding Witch
Erin Sterling

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: October 15th, 2024

I Want to Read This Because I absolutely adored the first two books in this series, and I’m so excited for the third! I love the way Erin Sterling has set up this world – the Penhallows are a family of Welsh witches, who helped set up the town of Graves Glen in America. For me, it’s so great to see Wales represented through the Penhallows, and I’m so excited to find out more about Bowen.

Sorcery and Small Magics
Maiga Doocy

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: October 15th, 2024

I Want to Read This Because it sounds really fun – a sorcerer and his rival are bound by a curse and set off to break it. Of course, there’s attraction there. The cover is absolutely eye-catching, too.

Witchlore
Emma Hinds

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: October 14th, 2025

I Want to Read This Because more queer witchy goodness! Also includes raising the dead. Orlando is also a shapeshifter, and from the blurb, uses they/them pronouns, so it feels like they’re a reference to Virginia Woolf’s Orlando.

A Discovery of Witches
Deborah Harkness

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: February 8th, 2011

I Want to Read This Because I’m always curious about the ‘source’ material when I watch a TV show adapted from books. I like seeing the changes. I really enjoyed A Discovery of Witches – it’s witches AND vampires, so right up my street, and I’m so curious as to whether this book will live up to expectations!

Accidental Magic
Nicole Hall

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: May 22nd, 2020

I Want to Read This Because ah, Urban Fantasy. One of those subgenres I typically love but for various reasons haven’t read much of over the last few years! This is another tick in the ‘sounds fun’ column, too, with the protagonist moving into a house she inherits, which happens to have a sexy neighbour and fairies across the street. What more could you want?

What are some magical books on your TBR, or your favourites you’d recommend? Do you like witchy books or other forms of magic?
