Monday Moods: Halloween

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

It’s Halloween this week – what are your plans? Did you start early this past weekend or are you waiting for the day itself? For some of us, Halloween is just as important as Christmas! Although I’m writing this in advance, I can safely say we have plans for this year – this past weekend, all being well, we’ll have gone to a bit of a family Halloween event local to us. And on the big day, we’re going to go do something a bit more adult and go to a new scary attraction. I’m sure I’ll have reviews up for both on Divination Hollow asap! As for Monday Moods…well, as the last one of Blogtober, this feels fitting, doesn’t it?

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Halloween

Something Wicked This Way Comes
Ray Bradbury

Genre: Horror
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: September 17th, 1962

I Want to Read This Because it’s a classic horror I haven’t read, yet one which is widely popular and so firmly linked to Halloween. Whether or not I’ll read it around Halloween remains to be seen (though likely not this year), but I’d like to see what so many people rave about.

Of Myth and Memento Mori
Victoria Clapton

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: October 13th, 2023

I Want to Read This Because I’m always intrigued when books lift things from Wales (the town here is Appalachian but called Hiraeth Hollow, it features ‘knockers’ also known as coblyn in Wales, and there’s an inhuman stranger called Gwilym). Sometimes authors can pull this off, but more often than not…well, we’ll see! It looks like this is set around Halloween, so it’ll be…intriguing, at the least.

No Rest for the Wicked
Rachel Louise Adams

Genre: Horror / Mystery
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: September 16th, 2025

I Want to Read This Because I love that cover! This one is based in a town that goes hard for Halloween but also has a history of violence around the holiday. Something about people escaping their hometowns – for various reasons – but being drawn back usually grabs my interest, and I’m hooked by the blurb alone.

The Folklore of Wales: Ghosts
Delyth Badder, Mark Norman

Genre: Non-Fiction – History
Age: Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: September 28th, 2023

I Want to Read This Because although this isn’t specifically about Halloween, it does feel like a good read for autumn (and winter, to be fair). I love reading about folklore, and we have some really interesting folklore around ghosts here in Wales, so this should be a lot of fun.

Totally Spooked
Zoey Indiana

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: October 6th, 2020

I Want to Read This Because I really enjoyed Marked by the Panther, which also involves shifter speed dating (but is part of a different series), so I think I’ll enjoy this one, too. It’s set around Halloween, so is definitely fitting for spooky season!
