Book Blogger Hop: May 5th – 11th

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, it was relaunched on February 15, 2013 by Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addict. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

Have you ever been told that you have an excessive number of books? If so, what was your reaction?
(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

Yes. Well, maybe not in those exact words, but I have definitely had people question the amount of books I have! I admit, it made moving very difficult, even with trying to get rid of a load. And there’s still a lot here we need to get rid of, that we’ve read and set aside because we’re not going to read it again. But it’s hard to shift books en masse – between the two of us, we have multiple boxes marked “books to go”.

Usually, my reaction is to shrug and say, “I’ll get through them” when someone mentions the books. Truthfully, it’s unlikely I’ll get through every single book I have, but I know I have something here no matter what mood I’m in or what I fancy reading at any particular point. When I was younger, there were points when I quickly and often found myself running out of things to read; luckily I had friends willing to lend me books and I reread things often, but there were times when I’d look in a bookshop and feel eager for the day when I could just stroll in and pick up any book I liked.

And now I kind of can. I have a tendency to emerge from almost anywhere with a book, somehow. At a family birthday recently, I ended up picking up the first romance book in a series, because I had just listened to the audiobook of the second, and it was just sitting there on a bookcase in a bar begging to be picked up. Charity shops can be both dangerous and incredibly great for picking up books, and I’ve walked out of charity book shops before with armfuls. I do, however, try to restrain myself – for example, if there’s a good deal on in Waterstones, it’s likely I won’t just be walking out with books for me but maybe a book as a present, too.

In short – yes, I have been told I have “too many books”. My usual response – “There’s no such thing as ‘too many’ books.”
