That Dreaded TBR #51

Here we are again, another attempt to reduce the amount of books on my absolutely way too big Goodreads Want to Read shelf. We are currently in November 2013, so just a little under 10 years ago, and it’s really fun seeing how my tastes have changed in that time. As usual, there are lots of zombie books here – clearly I was going through a phase – but there’s a few different types of books here too. For anyone interested, the first book today is currently number 118 on the shelf.

Dead Inside: Do Not Enter: Notes from the Zombie Apocalypse
Lost Zombies

This sounds like it would have been really cool, unique, original…back when it was first published. But I feel like this has been overdone by this point, and if I was going to read a “notes from the apocalypse” book, something more recent would be much more interesting, especially with how overdone zombies and this style of book feels now. Maybe one I pick up at some random point if I’m come across it and feel curious, but for now any interest in this is gone.

The World is Dead
Edited by Kim Paffenroth

I think I’d have more interest in this if the list of names involved wasn’t so heavily male dominated. I’ve read enough zombie anthologies that, again, it would need to be doing something really interesting with the genre to get my interest, or at least have some intriguing names attached. On the face of it, this just looks…kind of boring, same old same old.

Twilight of the Dead
Travis Adkins

More zombies! More…of the same kind of thing I’ve seen before, that is small band of survivors must venture across blah blah blah there’s a cure blah blah blah. The fact this specifically notes in the summary it puts a new spin on the genre but “remains true to classic rules” but doesn’t actually give indication of what that spin might possibly be and the rest of the summary is all same old same old makes me think there’s really not much ‘new’ here, now.

The Commitments
Roddy Doyle

Yay, no zombies! Unless I’ve heard the totally wrong things about this book…I know I’ve read part of this in extracts, and I feel like I really should dig into it at some point, it being considered a modern classic and all. It also just seems like something I might actually enjoy, and eventually I will get around to it!

The Crown Tower
Michael J. Sullivan

I’m going to assume this was recommended to me at some point or on a list of ‘must reads’ or something because…I honestly have no idea why it’s here. I’m not familiar with this book or author, and there are so many great fantasy books out there I’m never going to have time to read every series I want to. Maybe if this crosses back into the public consciousness one day I might pick it up, but until then, I can’t see this being one I reach for ever.

Four more books gone and I’m very happy with that! Pretty sure the next 5 also contain a lot of zombies, so will probably see a fair few of them go, too. If you have read any of these, or agree/disagree with any of these choices, I’d love to hear about it!
