Blogmas Day 3: The Christmas Stocking Book Tag

The first Book Tag of Blogmas! This feels kind of special, doesn’t it? I saw this initially over on Fi’s Bibliofiles last year, and have had it sitting in my bookmarks waiting for Blogmas to roll around once again. The book tag was created by Kate at  Reading through Infinity.

Blogmas 2023: Day 1 / Day 2

The Christmas Stocking Book Tag

You get up on Christmas morning and your stocking is full! You take it down and start to unwrap the treats inside. The first thing you see is…

AN ORANGE! WHICH BOOK IS REFRESHING AND VIBRANT, BOTH INSIDE AND OUT?

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Review

I love this book so much. It was such a wonderful read and it remains one of my favourite books read this year. It’s so sweet throughout and I got totally wrapped up in this cute story.

THE NEXT THING YOU SEE IS A BAG OF CHOCOLATE COINS. (YUM) WHICH BOOK HAVE YOU RECENTLY BOUGHT THAT WAS EXPENSIVE, BUT TOTALLY WORTH THE HIGH PRICE?

Gay Aliens and Queer Folk

I’m totally a “wait for paperback because hardback is too expensive” kind of girl, but…well, I went to an event for this one, and I always pick up books at events because it’s a very good way to support them – I haven’t read it yet but I already know it is going to be worth every single penny.

YOU ALSO PULL OUT A BATH BOMB. TELL US ABOUT A BOOK THAT HAD EXPLOSIVE ACTION SCENES.

Iron Widow

Review

I don’t read a whole lot of action heavy books, just not my thing, but when I think of explosive action scenes, this is the book that springs immediately to mind. And it’s honestly such an excellent book.

NEXT IS A PACK OF PLAYING CARDS. WHICH SERIES WON YOU OVER?

The Folk of the Air

I try not to buy into hype too often – sometimes it ends up being a big of a let-down. But when I first started getting more involved on Twitter and especially Book Twitter, I saw The Cruel Prince referenced constantly, and it felt like being left out of a brilliant joke? So I picked up the first one, really not expecting much, and absolutely fell head over heels. And learnt that sometimes, yes, the hype is very deserved.

YOU ALSO GET A CANDLE. WHICH CHARACTER IS A SYMBOL OF HOPE IN THEIR STORY?

Dreckly – The Rose Daughter

Review

I think Dreckly’s very existence in this book is symbolic of hope, not to mention she’s one of the only people to have ever escaped from a particular supernatural prison. I’ve mentioned this book a few times, but it’s because it’s such a good read and a really enjoyable urban fantasy, and I’m looking forward to going back and checking out the rest of the series.

THERE ARE SOCKS INSIDE TOO. IS THERE A BOOK THAT YOU THINK REALLY ENCOMPASSES ALL THE DISTINCTIVE TROPES OF ITS GENRE?

Garth Marenghi’s TerrorTome

I’ve only just finished listening to this one, but it really perfectly encapsulates so many pulpy horror tropes, in such a brilliantly funny way. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much during an audiobook.

THERE’S ALSO A NOTEBOOK. WHICH AUTHOR’S WRITING PROCESS DO YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING/INSPIRING?

This is a hard one – I find I don’t often know much about author’s processes, as such? I do like reading about them, but I’d struggle to name an author in particular! I will admit, I find the research historical fantasy authors must do to be really incredible, to keep whatever their fantasy aspects are grounded in a real, historical setting.

THERE’S ALSO A SMALL BEDSIDE CLOCK. WHICH BOOK TOOK YOU A LONG TIME TO PICK UP BUT WAS WORTH IT IN THE END?

This one…I found quite hard? I feel like there are some books which I got into later (like The Cruel Prince mentioned above), and some genres which took me a long time to really get into – romance, as a good example, or any of the subgenres I now can’t get enough of – but looking at my recent reading, as in the last few years, even where I’ve been trying to read older books as well as newer arcs, there’s nothing I’ve picked up that’s blown me away enough to think “I should have read this sooner”. I did recently finish Under the Dome, which was the oldest book on my Goodreads Want to Read, and even that I felt a bit let down by.

I would love to see your answers to these, too – if you’ve done this in previous years or decide to do this tag this year, please do let me know in the comments!
