2024 Reading Challenges

I really enjoyed doing the Storygraph Reading Challenges in 2023, so I am continuing them on into 2024. This year, I’ve also created one of my own. I haven’t yet posted my final 2023 Reading Challenges update, as I’m writing this just a little bit before the New Year and have a couple more books I’m hoping to finish! But for now, here’s the Reading Challenges I’ll be doing in 2024, and just a few of the books I’ve so far picked out for the prompts.

2023 Reading Challenges

Total Reading Goal 2024: 70 Books

Disney Reading Challenge 2024
Hosted by readingforthethrill

I am once again doing the Disney Reading Challenge – I really enjoyed this one last year, and my goal for this year is to complete all 40 books for this. Last year, the prompts were based on Disney songs. This year, they’re based on characters.

Belle – Well, Some People Use Their Imagination – a fantasy book

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

As soon as I saw this prompt, I knew this was the book I wanted to use for it. It has been sitting on my shelf for way too long.

Peter Pan – Go on! Go back and grow up! But I’m warning you, once you’re grown up you can never come backA YA of children’s book

My Throat an Open Grave by Tori Bovalino

I feel like I maybe didn’t read as much horror in 2023 as I would have liked, so I want to try and read a bit more going into 2024. This seems like a great pick for this prompt, and I find YA Horror can often be really strong, so I’m looking forward to this one.

Stitch – Blue punch buggy! No punch-back! – A book with a blue cover or spine

Gay Aliens and Queer Folk by Emily Garside

I did have this on my 2023 Disney Challenge but unfortunately didn’t get round to it, so as soon as I saw this prompt I knew I had to use this book for it. Very excited for this – I attended a talk by Emily Garside, which is where I picked up the book, and especially now after the specials and Christmas episodes of Doctor Who, I’m keen to read this before the season itself airs.

Musicals Reading Challenge 2024
Hosted by me

Yes, for 2024 I have created a Musicals Reading Challenge – it was an idea I pondered over last year and decided to go for it. I’ve limited this to 24 books, so I’m hoping I can clear this one in 2024, too.

Les Misérables – Do You Hear the People Sing – A book featuring a rebellion or revolution

Black Spartacus by Sudhir Hazareesingh

A book that has been sitting on my TBR for way too long. It was one of the books I used as an ‘example’ for the prompt, and kept it to be my book for it.

Hamilton – My Shot – A book about/featuring a key historical figure

Shakespeare by Bill Bryson

I’m kind of surprised at myself that I’ve never read this one before. I like Bryson’s work, I love Shakespeare, and I have my copy just waiting for me to finally pick it up.

Six – Six – A book with at least one queen

In the Shadow of Queens: Tales from the Tudor Court by Alison Weir

This is pretty much a perfect book to use for this prompt. I’ve been trying to get into more historical fiction recently, too, and I’m hoping I get on with this well enough to dive deeper into Weir’s work.

Avengers Reading Challenge
Hosted by khaleesi987

This is a challenge that can be completed at any time, but I am going to be tackling this in 2024. There are 6 main prompts, and a load of bonus ones, too.

Captain America – the First Avenger – WWII book or something set in 1930s or 1940s

Blitz Spirit: Voices of Britain Living Through Crisis, 1939-1945 by Becky Brown

When it comes to history, I’m not a fan of battles and statistics – I much prefer reading about people, instead. This is another book that’s been on my TBR for a long time, and I think it’s a great fit for the prompt.

Iron Man – Science Bro #1: read something Science Fiction, something with an inventor, or something with a billionaire playboy philanthropist

Goldilocks by L.R. (Laura) Lam

I went for a relatively easy pick for this one, and another that’s been sitting on my TBR for a long time. I have this in paperback, and am really excited to read more from Lam after reading Seven Devils, co-written with Elizabeth May.

Thor – Anything related to Norse mythology or anything with a himbo

The Valkyrie by Kate Heartfield

I have quite a few books that could fit for this one, but this is the one I want to read the most.

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
Hosted by nora_knight

In 2024, I’m returning to the challenge I put aside in 2023 to focus on my year specific ones. This one can be completed at any time, and so far I’m 50% through it, with only 12 more books to go.

Seaspiracy – Changed how you think about something

This was the only related GIF I could find…

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

I really need to read this book – I do find nowadays I read a lot less physical books than I used to, but I might see in 2024 if I can change that.

Julie and the Phantoms – has a band/musicians

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I was going to try and read this before watching the series, but I couldn’t wait so I have seen the TV show. I loved it, and it made me even more keen to read the book.

Never Have I Ever – Coming of Age

Hexed by Julia Tuffs

Sabrina the Witch meets Sex Education – how could I resist? Definitely looking forward to this one!

I’m also taking part in the Barbie Reading Challenge, hosted by sydsshelves, but I haven’t yet picked out many books for this one. This runs 1st January to 31st December, but with 17 prompts I should hopefully be able to complete it.

Are you taking part or repeating any Reading Challenges for 2024? Which books are you most looking forward to reading in the New Year?
