Let’s Talk Bookish: Non-Bookish Hobbies

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted with Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Book Nook Bits has hosted since April 2022.

So I missed this one for the actual date it was for, but it’s such an interesting topic I figured I’d still jump on it!

Let’s Talk Bookish February 2nd:
Non-Bookish Hobbies

Prompts: Do most of your hobbies center around books? What do you like to do outside of reading & book blogging? Do some of your non-bookish hobbies relate to your reading?

It’s probably an even split between ‘bookish’ hobbies and non-bookish, I suppose? Though, depending how you class hobbies, that might fluctuate. I really like baking, but often don’t get the time for it. I write, and I run a horror website, and I play video games. Only one of those last three isn’t related to books in some way.

Baking is definitely completely separate from books, as are video games, though in some ways these still oddly link in to books, or involve books anyway – baking I use cookbooks for, and with games, I still have some guidebooks around for games like Final Fantasy, I’ve picked up a BioShock novelisation, etc.

Although I don’t really go often enough to class it as a hobby, I love the theatre, especially musicals – I love musicals whether it’s in the theatre or on film, and I especially enjoy proshots! It’s an extra treat being able to see any theatre live, however, as we can’t always afford it, but this year we’re getting to go to one of my favourite place (Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay) for both Gallifrey Cabaret – which we have seen before and loved! – and for Hamilton, which I am extremely excited about. As a sidenote, the cabaret space in WMC is excellent, and if you are anywhere near Cardiff, it is well worth seeing what they have on – they really have something for everyone.

So yes, I have some hobbies outside of reading/books, but books really are what I devote most of my time to, due to cost and time, etc. I can read anywhere, listen to an audiobook, pick up a graphic novel – it’s not like I can bake a cake while lying in bed first thing on a Sunday after I’ve just woken up, but I often get in some extra reading before I actually get out of bed.

What about your non-bookish hobbies? Did you do this Let’s Talk Bookish earlier this month? I’d love to read your posts and hear your thoughts!
