2024 Reading Challenges Update #3

It totally slipped my mind to do this for last week, but I did have a fair bit on over Easter (in a good way). So, a slightly late one, but here is my reading challenge update for April.

2024 Reading Challenges / Update #1 / Update #2

Goal: 22/70 (+9)

Disney Reading Challenge 2024

Read

Joy– We are gonna have a good day, which will turn into a good week, which will turn into a good year, which turns into a good life! – a book that brought you joy

Say You’ll Be My Jaan was an absolute pleasure to read, and definitely hits the ‘joy’ button very hard. I loved the two MCs, I loved the challenges they faced and the way they subtlety encouraged each other throughout. A really wonderful, lovely romance.

Hades – Name’s Hades, Lord of the dead. Hi, how ya doing’? – A Hades/Greek mythology retelling

I went for ‘Greek mythology retelling’ for this, and was left…disappointed by Taming the Minotaur. It was very short, but it was also very…weird. An odd one, for sure.

Tinkerbell – All it takes is faith, trust and pixie dust – a book recommended by a friend

This came from someone I always trust with book recs, and it absolutely delivered. I listened to it as an audiobook, and really enjoyed every second of Skyward Inn.

Books to Read: Gay Aliens and Queer Folk, An Improbable Season, The First Days

Musicals Reading Challenge 2024

Read

Mamma Mia! – Take a Chance on Me – a second chance romance

This wasn’t quite the ‘second chance romance’ I expected, it was enjoyable enough and a fun Regency romance to dig into. Chasing the Duke is centred around Christmas, but the holiday doesn’t dominate like you’d find in most Christmas romances. A fun one if you like Regency Romances.

Cabaret – Willkommen – Set around a club/bar/venue

I used Skyward Inn for this one, too – mainly because it’s very hard to find a book set around one of those options, at least I found it hard when trying to find one for this prompt! But this fit the bill perfectly.

Books to Read: Shakespeare, Crowned a Traitor, The Furies

Avengers Challenge!

Currently Reading

Hulk – Science Bros #2 – anything with a realistic science plot, a nonfic science book, something about radiation, OR something with a character who can’t control their temper

For this one I went with a ‘nonfic science book’, as there was one on my TBR I was eyeing up for a while and it felt like the perfect fit – The Science of Marvel. It’s not bad, but it’s fairly dense and dry.

Hawkeye – Deaf characters, characters who do archery, or a character who is a total “dad friend”

I’m listening to the audio book of True Biz for this one, which is set at a school for the deaf, and so far it’s pretty good.

Scarlet Witch – Magic, woman scorned, witches, twins…

This prompt was quite open, but The Once and Future Witches fits in nicely, I think. I’m not loving it, but not completely hating it either, though I don’t think it’ll make any top or favourite lists.

Books to Read: A Radical Act of Free Magic, Kissed

Barbie Reading Challenge
6/17 (+5) Prompts Completed

Read

Pink – Pink just looks so good on us – A book with a pink cover

I loved this one! Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up was so fun but had its emotional moments, too. If you quite like contemporary fiction that’s fresh, funny, and heartfelt, you can’t go wrong with this.

Barbie World – I’m a doll, but I still wanna party – A book with a party

This was the prompt I originally used Say You’ll Be My Jaan for, and it fit it really nicely.

Journey to the Real World – When we get to the real world – A book set in a fantasy/mythical land

Bookshops & Bonedust was such a fun, enjoyable read, and I loved every second. It feels very much inspired by Pratchett, and is written really well.

Speed Drive – Jump into the driver’s seat and put it into speed drive – a book you read in one day

This is another ‘double up’ one, as I used Taming the Minotaur. I think it’s the shortest book I’ve read in a long, long time.

Home – You think you know about me. Well, I know me better – A book from your favourite genre

I was more frustrated by Romance Fantasy A Curse of Blood and Wolves than anything else – I struggled to get through it, but got there in the end!

Books to Read: Ace of Spades, A Hunger Like No Other, Love That Journey for Me

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
13/24 (0) Prompts Completed

Again, no progress on this, but I’m hoping to get the other challenges a little more caught up and carry on with this, too, alongside them.

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, Hexed

So, another month gone, and more challenge prompts completed. I’m glad at how I’ve managed so far, especially as there were two DNFs this month, but I’m edging ever closer to actually finishing one of these. At the moment, I think it’s mostly likely to be the Avengers one – including bonus prompts! – I finish first, but we’ll see.
