Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted with Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Book Nook Bits has hosted since April 2022.
Bit of a late Let’s Talk Bookish this week, but no mater. This is a really fun topic and as soon as I saw it I was so excited to jump in!
Let’s Talk Bookish July 5th 10th:
Traveling with Books – How Many is Too Many?
Prompts: When traveling, how many books is too many books? Do you have a system for what to bring, or do you just bring whatever you feel like reading? Do you make sure to have a balance of physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks?
Depending on how long I’m going somewhere, how long it takes to get there, etc, the answer varies. Usually, if it’s more than a one or two night stay with a travel time over 2 hours, I’ll take my Kindle as well as two physical books. Most of my ‘travel’ in recent years has been going back and forth to Margate from Cardiff to see family, which by car is between 4.5 and 5ish hours, though a post-Christmas drive home took us 10 hours, but that is incredibly unusual! Normally for these trips we go 4 nights, so my Kindle and two physical books is more than enough to keep me occupied and give me something to read in the mornings with my coffee.
I try to take a variety of books, but I do set up a specific folder on my Kindle for whatever trip we’re going on, and make sure I have a few different books downloaded and in there so I can easily dip in and grab whatever I fancy if I finish my current read. More recently, since I started doing Reading Challenges, I’ll put one book from each challenge in there, and just see what I fancy if I’m picking a new one. For the physical books, I’ll take whatever I’m currently reading and just pick a random one from the challenges, again keeping in mind a little bit of variety.
As you can tell from above, I do tend to have a balance. I don’t worry so much about audiobooks as if I do get a chance to listen to them, I usually already have one on the go. The main thing for me is making sure I cover the travel time, though in all honesty I get more reading done if I’m somewhere I can relax and, as mentioned above, I tend to read more in the mornings with a coffee, not something I usually do when I’m home!
What about you? How many books do you take if you’re travelling? Do you find you read more on the journey, or while you’re actually at the location you’re visiting?
