#5OnMyTBR: Hyped Book You Skipped on in the Past

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

This is an interesting one. Sometimes, I’ve been greatly rewarded when reading ‘hyped’ books (Folk of the Air and Shades of Magic series both come to mind!) and other times I’ve been left feeling a little underwhelmed. But if I’m seeing a book everywhere and something about it catches my interest, I’ll likely pick it up sooner or later. These books are ones I’ve skipped over for no particular reason, really, and just haven’t happened to read them yet, but I remember a lot of buzz for them at various points since their release.

#5OnMyTBR July 22nd: Hyped Book You Skipped on in the Past

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 1st, 2021

Why I Want to Read: So, I did think I had this in ebook and paperback, but turned out, I only had it in paperback. I did actually go to read this before realising I didn’t have it on my Kindle. It’s been on my TBR now for quite a while, and is definitely coming up in one of my reading challenges. I really like the sound of this one – I don’t read many thrillers, and haven’t read a load of YA thrillers specifically, so I’m keen to explore this one and see if it’s a genre I like.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

Genre: Horror
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: April 7th, 2020

Why I Want to Read: I remember hearing a lot about this book at the time it was released, and after reading Hendrix’s The Final Girl Support Group, I can see why; he knows his horror, and I really liked his writing style. I picked this up on audiobook, and I’m looking forward to listening to it.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: September 15th, 2020

Why I Want to Read: It felt like the whole of Book Twitter was reading this when it came out, and it felt like it hung around for quite a long time – even from the little I know about it, I feel like I can see why. That cover is stunning, and it’s got elements of Arthurian legends mixed in, which definitely feels like something that has gained in popularity even more since this book was released. I love exploring different Arthurian retellings, and this one sounds like a lot of fun to read.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Genre: Sci-Fi
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: August 26th, 2014

Why I Want to Read: This is one of those books with longevity – it’s still highly regarded ten years after publication, and got what seemed like a great boost at the start of the pandemic. I got a bunch of books around that time, and this was one of them. Every time I went to grab it, I realised I wasn’t quite in the right headspace for it during lockdowns. I’ve been meaning to actually read it for a while, especially as it sounds like something I’d really enjoy, and hopefully it won’t be another ten years before I finally get to it!

Near the Bone by Christina Henry

Genre: Horror
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 13th, 2021

Why I Want to Read: It felt like there was a lot of excitement for this book prior to release, and after reading The Ghost Tree by the same author, I can understand why. I really liked that one, and was definitely keen on this, especially seeing others rave over it. Other books did get in the way, but hopefully I can find a good prompt for this one on the reading challenges soon!

Have you read any of these? Or are any on your TBR? What kind of hyped books do you want to read, but just haven’t got to yet?
