#5OnMyTBR: Reading Soon

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

The actual prompt for this week was ‘already bought’, but for these posts I do only count the books I currently have in one format or another, so I thought highlighting some of the next books on my reading challenges would be better for me. And, very usefully, as I’m currently in the midst of 5 challenges, it works out really well! To note, these are all physical books, too, as they tend to be the ones it takes me longest to get to on my challenges.

#5OnMyTBR July 29th: Reading Soon

The First Days by Rhiannon Frater

Genre: Horror – Post Apocalyptic
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: August 14th, 2008
Reading Challenge: Disney Reading Challenge 2024

Why I Want to Read: I can’t remember what initially drew me to this book – probably just zombies, considering at one point I couldn’t get enough – but it’s been sitting on my TBR for a long time now. I’m intrigued by it, and hope it offers something more than just zombies.

Shakespeare by Bill Bryson

Genre: Nonfiction – Biography
Age: Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: January 1st, 2007
Reading Challenge: Musicals Reading Challenge 2024

Why I Want to Read: I’ve only read one or two of Bryson’s books, but I thoroughly enjoyed his writing and humour. I really like Shakespeare, too, though I feel like most of what I know about him is fragmented and heavily influenced by pop culture, and I’m sure there’ll be some interesting things here to dig into.

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Adam Christopher

Genre: Sci-Fi
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: May 18th, 2019
Reading Challenge: Avengers Challenge!

Why I Want to Read: I wasn’t a huge fan of Suspicious Minds, but this one feels different enough I think (hope) I’ll enjoy it. It moves the setting away from Hawkins, and takes us to New York, 1977, focusing on Hopper after he returns home from Vietnam. I find it interesting that the infamous blackout is a key plot point here, too, and I’m intrigued about how that’s handled.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Genre: Thriller
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 1st, 2021
Reading Challenge: Barbie Reading Challenge

Why I Want to Read: I feel like this is coming up more and more on these lists. I’m really looking forward to it – I don’t read many thrillers, but this one feels a bit different, especially with the private school setting. I’m excited to dig in.

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

Genre: Nonfiction – Race – Social Justice
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: January 16th, 2018
Reading Challenge: Netflix Movies & TV Shows

Why I Want to Read: I’m not that far off picking up this challenge again, and it’ll be good to finally get to this one. I think it’s important to continually educate myself in areas I don’t have experience in, and I’ve heard really good things about this book. Just need to finish off a couple other books on the other challenges so they’ve caught up before I hop back on the Netflix one.

As always, if you’ve read any of these and want to share your thoughts, please do! Or let me know if these are on your TBR. What sort of books do you have coming up soon?
