#5OnMyTBR: Mystery

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

I don’t often read a load of Mystery books, but if they’re on my TBR something about them has definitely caught my eye. I do like being hooked by a good mystery book, but I like when there’s something else going on in them rather than pure mystery/thriller books – if there’s a paranormal/supernatural element, or historical element, and so on.

#5OnMyTBR August 5th: Mystery

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Adam Christopher

Genre: Mystery – Horror
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: May 28th, 2019

Why I Want to Read: I guess the main reason for picking this one up is that it’s Stranger Things. I did read the first Stranger Things book and wasn’t overly impressed, but the beauty of tie-in novels is they’re usually picked up by different authors and focusing on different elements. For this, I’m looking forward to seeing what Jim was up to before Eleven entered his life.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 1st, 2021

Why I Want to Read: This one is coming up so regularly on these TBR lists, I honestly am starting to see it like a sign. I’ve wanted to read this for a long time – it’s thriller, which isn’t one of my usual genres, but it’s got just enough other things going on I’m intrigued. I’m looking forward to digging into this and seeing how the story plays out.

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey

Genre: Mystery – Sci-Fi
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: February 16th, 2021

Why I Want to Read: The sci-fi aspect drew me to this, along with the idea of the clone at the centre of the story. It’s an intriguing blurb, for sure, but I’m wondering if the idea will be sustained throughout. It seems to have mixed reviews, so I’m curious about my own response for this one.

A Study in Steam by Stephanie K. Clemens

Genre: Mystery – Steampunk – Historical
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: February 22nd, 2022

Why I Want to Read: Firstly, I love that cover. Secondly, I want to read more steampunk books! And this one sounds like a lot of fun. Especially as it’s about a woman who is one of the first admitted to a university to study steam engineering.

Two Spinsters and a Corpse by Eve Tarrington

Genre: Mystery – Historical
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: September 1st, 2024

Why I Want to Read: It’s Regency, and it sounds like so much fun! Regency isn’t just for romance, and I love reading non-romance (or not explicitly romance) genres set in the same era. I’m excited to see how this plays out!

So, there we have it – five mystery books on my TBR! Have you read any of these? Have any thoughts you’d like to share, or recommendations for mystery books you’ve enjoyed?
