Let’s Talk Bookish: All About Bookmarks

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted with Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Book Nook Bits has hosted since April 2022.

Oh, I love bookmarks! They’re always such a little treat, whether they come free with a book or included in a book box or are purchased for myself or as a little gift. So I am very excited to talk about bookmarks today!

Let’s Talk Bookish August 16th:
All About Bookmarks
(Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Prompts: Do you use bookmarks? Do you have any favorite ones? Or do you just grab whatever object is close by? Do you miss having bookmarks when reading ebooks or audiobooks? What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve used as a bookmark?

Yes, I do use them. I have a little stack in my desk drawer so they’re always in reach – I usually have a few physical books on the go at once (normally whatever my current read is, plus a graphic novel, plus a research/writing book) so it’s very useful to have all my bookmarks in one place, where I can just reach in and grab one when needed.

My favourite is one I purchased years ago from an artist named Cassie, who did a lovely series featuring different horror writers. I got the Stephen King one, and have used it pretty consistently ever since! Cassie now longer does bookmarks, but you can find more of her excellent work at her shop.

Sometimes, when I have been stuck – largely before I amassed my collection – I’ve grabbed what flat object is nearby. I’ve used paperclips (not successfully), train tickets, art prints, etc.

I do miss them with ebooks and even audiobooks – I find that reading with technology results in losing my place more often, whether it’s due to tapping the wrong button or some sort of glitch! I know there are ‘digital’ bookmarks, but these often just seem a touch clunky.

The most outrageous thing…I’ve resorted to using all sorts as temporary bookmarks, for whatever reason. Especially as a teenager when I didn’t seem to have as many and had a tendency of losing the few I did have. Once, I used the only thing I had to hand that seemed like it would work (it didn’t!) – the empty foil container from a packet of painkillers.

I would love to hear about your favourite bookmarks, and what kind of objects you’ve used in the past when you haven’t had a bookmark close at hand!

  1. I love using bookmarks especially those with cute designs or funny quotes. However it happens from time to time that I’m to lazy to get up to choose a bookmark and so I will use the first thing that I find as a bookmark. Be it a receipt, a ruler, a pen, etc. I think that I’ve tried an empty foil of meds as well and I clearly wasn’t satisfied of the result, lol.
