This was another book I picked up during the Romance Bookworms event, and it’s definitely a series I’ll be continuing. Gwen travels to Glastonbury, England, to explore the area and visit somewhere she thinks is connected to the Arthurian legends she loves so much. She goes with her black cat, Sir Lancelot, and is supposed to meet her bestie there. But her unreliable best friend doesn’t show, so Gwen explores the area on her own. When she gets to St Michael’s Tower, her tour guide shoves her through a magical portal into Avalon, where Arthur and Merlin have been trapped since Merlin saved Arthur’s life. Oh, and her cat transforms into a handsome, deadly man.
Putting it right up front – this is a very American take on the Arthurian legends, and a very loose take. There’s very little these characters share with the heroes of legend/folklore, except for the names, so if that’s something that will bother you, I’d suggest avoiding this.
Fortunately, although I found some things slightly off-putting, on the whole I enjoyed this. The three men are distinct from one another, each offering Gwen something different while having their own goals and motivations. The plot is intriguing enough, revolving around Gwen being able to use magic Merlin doesn’t seem to have access to, and possibly being the key to getting him and Arthur out of Avalon. It’s an interesting concept, and one I think works nicely for the story at hand. It’s also got a nice level of steam to it, while leaving enough room to introduce the characters and let us, as readers, get to know them.
I’d suggest picking this up if you like romance retellings that play fast and loose with what they’re retelling, and can overlook some of the more ‘iffy’ side that comes with that, but definitely if you enjoy why choose with paranormal elements, this works nicely.
