Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted with Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Book Nook Bits has hosted since April 2022.
Initially, I wasn’t sure I’d have much to say on this topic – I’m not the best at keeping up with my shelves! – but the more I thought about, the more I realised I do tend to organise all my books, in different ways. So, let’s dive in!
Let’s Talk Bookish November 8th:
How Do You Organise Your Books?
Prompts: How do you organize your books? By color? Author? Genre? Do you often reorganize your books, or are they always the same? If you have a lot of ebooks or audiobooks, do you have a way of organizing those?
I tend to organise books by genre. I’m not the best at keeping up with my shelves, however, and I don’t tend to rearrange them. I do have different shelves for stuff I’ve read versus haven’t read, and separately to the books on the shelves, I also have different places for different books. These aren’t arranged by genre, and usually they end up in a pile somewhere. But they are organised depending on whether I’ve read, haven’t read, or will be reading soon.
I have a book trolley that contains the books I want to read for reading challenges, and I keep the rest of my books separated. If I’ve read a book and don’t think I’ll want to pick it up again, it goes in a box, ready to go elsewhere. Otherwise, my shelves are mainly organised by genre, but sometimes this falls apart when I throw another book on the shelf.
I also organise ebooks and audiobooks to a point. For all my books – physical and digital – I keep a log, tracking what I’ve read and haven’t read, noting down things like genre, page number, tropes etc in a spreadsheet, which helps a lot when looking for books for various challenges. I also note where I got the book from, if I purchased it as part of an event or received it as a gift, etc.
And finally, I keep my Kindle books in folders. Again, these are divided by genre, but I put my arcs in a different folder. If I’m going to be away for a few days, I tend to download the books I might want to read and put them in another folder, so I can easily grab them as and when needed.
That’s pretty much how I organise my books! What about you? How do you organise your book collections?
