Book Review: Her Princess at Midnight by Erica Ridley

Format: ebook
Published: November 10th, 2023
Age: Adult
Genre: Historical Romance

Rating: 5/5 Stars

I adored this! In Her Princess at Midnight, Ridley takes the Cinderella story and puts a delightful sapphic spin on it – Cynthia doesn’t fall for the prince, but for his sister, whose beauty outshines the stepsisters’ ugliness. Cynthia is determined to attend the ball and see the princess again, though of course her stepmother and stepsisters stand in her way.

This is a novella, and the length suits the semi-fairy tale vibes in the book. It’s a nice blend of historical and fairy tale, but the ‘magic’ is left ambiguous, and the ‘fairy godmother’ role is less a separate character and taken over more by Cynthia and the princess fulfilling their dreams themselves. I loved the way Ridley blended in the iconic elements of the tale while still keeping it firmly in the regency setting.

It’s instalove, too, which again does feel like it fits the fairy tale element really well. The short length does mean some of it is a little rushed, and things are wrapped up fairly quickly, but overall I really enjoyed this regency fairy tale retelling.
