That Dreaded TBR #73

There are currently way too many books on my Want to Read shelf, so I’m back with another instalment of That Dreaded TBR (dun dun dun). Here, I attempt to reduce the books on this shelf by going through them five at a time, seeing which ones catch my interest and which ones I’m just not really feeling keen on anymore, for various reasons. So, let’s see how many of the books I added to this shelf way back in December 2013 I still want to read.

Part 71

RULES

Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5/10/however many books. If done again, start from where you left off.
Read the synopses of the books
Decide: should it stay or should it go?

164. Sourland
Joyce Carol Oates

Genre: Horror
Published: September 14th, 2010

Often when I’m going through this, if I come across an author who is quite well known but who I haven’t read, I know that eventually, if I come to them, it could be a totally different book, and if I enjoy it, I’ll seek out their other works. So keeping it on my want to read seems a bit redundant.

165. The Bone Key: The Necromantic Mysteries of Kyle Murchison Booth
Sarah Monette

Genre: Horror
Published: June 1st, 2007

I’m sure this is a good book – it’s highly rated on Goodreads and won a Shirley Jackson award in 2007, but I feel like the blurb doesn’t give me much to go on to tell if I’ll actually like it or not. I’ll skip this one.

Status: Gone

166. Clockwork
Philip Pullman

Genre: Horror
Published: January 1st, 1996

I like Philip Pullman, and if this came into my possession I would definitely read it, but it’s not the kind of book I’d go out of my way to read. Just one I feel like I’d pick up if I saw it by chance.

Status: Gone

167. Un Lun Dun
China Miéville

Genre: Fantasy
Published: February 13th, 2007

Similar to the Joyce Carol Oates book above, this is an author I do want to read, but this probably isn’t the book I’d start with.

Status: Gone

168. The Travelling Vampire Show
Richard Laymon

Genre: Horror
Published: April 1st, 2000

As with the others above really – I want to read Laymon, I know I want to read Laymon, but I do have other Richard Laymon books here and none of them are this book. It might be one I come back to at some point – I do love vampires – but for now, I’m not going out of my way for it.

Status: Gone

I’m definitely pretty happy with today’s results – removing 5 books means my Want to Read comes down just a little faster! There are still way, way too many on there, but we’re getting there, if a bit slowly.
