Top Ten Tuesday: Books You’d Be A Fool Not to Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I picked these books for a variety of different reasons. They’re all quite different from one another, but out of my more recent reads they all stand out. If you have your own recommendations for me, I’d love to hear them! I’m sticking to six for today.

Top Six Books You’d Be A Fool Not to Read

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods
Molly X. Chang

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: April 16th, 2024
Review Coming Soon

Why You Should Read It: I’ll put this upfront: this book is not a romance. It leans on romance tropes, and it uses them really well, but ultimately, it’s not – instead, it’s an excellent exploration of the lengths people go to to ensure their own survival. And though it’s fantasy, it blends in some sci-fi elements really well, and often feels like it’s akin to a battle between fantasy and sci-fi. I really enjoyed this one, and hope people do check it out because it’s already a favourite of mine.

Garth Marenghi’s TerrorTome
Garth Marenghi

Genre: Horror – Comedy
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: November 3rd, 2022
Review

Why You Should Read It: If you like horror and want something guaranteed to make you laugh, you need to check out TerrorTome. The genius of horror master Garth Marenghi—Frighternerman, Darkscribe, Doomsage – can’t be denied, and TerrorTome is a loving homage/parody of horror as a whole. It’s incredibly funny, and I highly recommend the audiobook if you can.

The Governess Affair
Courtney Milan

Genre: Historical Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 21st, 2012
Review Coming Soon

Why You Should Read It: I find historical romances can be a bit hit or miss for me, so when I find one I love, I want to shout about it everywhere. I loved this novella – it introduces two wonderful characters and sets up for the series in a brilliant way, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of Brothers Sinister already.

Love That Journey for Me: The Queer Revolution of Schitt’s Creek
Emily Garside

Genre: Nonfiction – Essays
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 24th, 2021
Review

Why You Should Read It: It was either going to be this or Emily’s Gay Aliens and Queer Folk. Both books are excellent, and if you’re a fan of Schitt’s Creek you need to read this. It’s like a love letter to the show, diving into the queer aspects and demonstrating what makes this show and town so special.

Jacked Up
Latrexa Nova

Genre: Dark Romance – Paranormal
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: November 24th, 2023
Review

Why You Should Read It: Okay, yes, I admit – any chance to try and convince anyone else to read this book. It’s a bit messed up and there’s a lot of dark stuff here, and it involves a sentient object romance with a possessed Jack-in-the-box…have I convinced you yet?

Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up
Alexandra Potter

Genre: Contemporary – Comedy
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: December 31st, 2020
Review

Why You Should Read It: You know those books that just light you up? That make you feel truly, deeply warm and fuzzy inside? This is one of those books. And I think, with the whole…state of the world, we need these kind of books more than ever. So if you need something for a pick-me-up, this is bound to do it.

Have you read any of these or are any on your TBR? Are there books you’ve read you think everyone (or as many people as possible) should read?
