Monday Moods: School

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

Yes, it’s that time of year again when school starts. We’re in a fresh academic year, and if you’re heading back to school this month in any shape or form, I hope you’ve been able to pick up some nice new supplies and are feeling excitement rather than dread. For this week’s Monday Moods, we have a school theme, to mark the time of year.

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
School

Honey & Spice
Bolu Babalola

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: July 5th, 2022
Setting: University

I Want to Read This Because it’s a university-set romance by a Black British author, and it’s the author’s debut novel. I feel like I don’t hear about British books as much as I do American (and I definitely hear more about both of them than books from any other country!), so I’m always keen to dive in when I see a book that intrigues me from a British author. And this – no pun intended considering the book’s title – sounds delicious.

The Mercury in Me
Rachael Fernandes

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: June 6th, 2024
Setting: Secondary School

I Want to Read This Because I’m getting closer and closer to this one! So eventually it will stop appearing on Monday Moods! Anyway, this is another British author with a British based book, and it feels rare to see Sixth Form referenced in YA. I have fond memories of the single musical I did in secondary school (I auditioned on a whim, because it was We Will Rock You) and this feels like it might evoke some nostalgia, while incorporating one of the greatest singers ever (take a guess about why I only auditioned for that one musical…)

Love at First Psych
Cara Bastone

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: March 2nd, 2023
Setting: College (US)

I Want to Read This Because another one that keeps cropping up on Monday Moods – I’m hoping it won’t be too long until I get to this, as it’s one I’m really eager on, especially with Santino Fontana as a narrator, along with a full cast. It looks very sweet and fun!

Curses & Charm
C.J. Pinard

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: February 1st, 2021
Setting: Academy School

I Want to Read This Because a corrective school for supernaturals sounds like it could be so much fun! Witches and vampires and more, and I’m completely sold. I’m really eager to read this, though it might be a while as it’s not currently on any of my prompts!

Sister Spirit
Efua Traoré

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 11th, 2024
Setting: Boarding School

I Want to Read This Because it sounds really intriguing! Like Curses & Charm, this isn’t currently on any of my reading challenges, but I am keeping an eye out for one where it might fit! It’s noted as a supernatural thriller, and those are absolutely my favourite kinds of thrillers.

If you have any favourite ‘school’ books, please do let me know! I’d love to hear your recommendations.
