Monday Moods: Freebie! – Eighties

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

This week for Monday Moods, it’s a Freebie week. As it was my partner’s 40th birthday over the weekend, I thought I’d do Eighties as a theme! So, here are 5 books on my TBR that are either about, set in, or published in the 1980s!

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
The Eighties

Bloody Valentine: The Story of Britain’s Worst Miscarriage of Justice
John L. Williams

Genre: Non-Fiction – True Crime
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: February 18th, 2021

I Want to Read This Because I grew up hearing about this case and the Cardiff Three. The book is about a miscarriage of justice after the murder of Lynette White in 1988, when a group of Black men were wrongfully convicted of her murder. It’s the kind of case that stays with you after you hear about it, and one which I think most ‘locals’ who do know about it feel incredibly angry about (rightfully). It’s important, I think, to understand these situations and dive deeper where possible.

The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy in Four Parts
Douglas Adams

Genre: Sci-Fi – Humour
Age: Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: January 1st, 1986

I Want to Read This Because I have read The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but not the books that come after! I do want to reread the first one before tackling the others, so having the first four in one volume is going to be useful for that.

Moonlight Drive
A.R. Hadley

Genre: Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: May 18th, 2021

I Want to Read This Because the idea of this being a rock band in the 80s, with the FMC joining a rock band’s 1985 tour, really appealed, and I’m intrigued by the premise. ‘Rockstar romance’ is one of those subgenres I’ve only read a little of, so I’d like to read more and see if it’s one for me or not.

Nightmare Movies: Horror on Screen Since the 1960s
Kim Newman

Genre: Non-Fiction – History – Horror
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: January 1st, 1984

I Want to Read This Because I really love reading about horror movies. I love reading about films, and I love reading about horror, so this is perfect. I’m also a fan of Kim Newman, and this book has been sitting on my TBR for quite a long time now!

Cinema Love
Jiaming Tang

Genre: Historical – Literary
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: May 7th, 2024

I Want to Read This Because it sounds different to what I usually read, but definitely interesting, spanning post-socialist China, 1980s Chinatown, and contemporary New York, this novel focuses on gay men and the women who marry them. I’ve been trying to read a bit more historical outside of romance, too, so I definitely need to find a place for this near the top of my TBR for next year!

As always, if you have any recommendations for me on this topic just let me know, and please do drop a link below if you’re taking part in Monday Moods.
