Monday Moods: Witches

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

Much like the werewolves from last week, witches are incredibly versatile, popping up across various genres and occupying a multitude of different roles. Admittedly, the books today from my TBR all have witches as protagonists, rather than villains or antagonists. Not that I don’t love a good evil witch, but sometimes it’s fun to see them occupy more of a hero role!

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Witches

The Wedding Witch
Erin Sterling

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: October 15th, 2024

I Want to Read This Because this has popped up a few times on Monday Moods, which usually means I’m not too far off from reading it (hopefully!). I loved the first two books in the Graves Glen series, and I’m so excited to return to this world and the witches in it. It’s rare to come across Welsh representation in books not specifically about Wales/being Welsh etc, so I’ve long had a soft spot for this series.

A Discovery of Witches
Deborah Harkness

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: February 8th, 2011

I Want to Read This Because this is another one that’s been on my TBR for quite a while! I actually picked this up because I enjoyed the TV series so much, though I haven’t had the best luck reading books after watching the show. Still, I’m excited to give this one a go, especially as it sounds like it blurs historical in more than the show version.

An Ignorant Witch
E.M. Graham

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: July 25th, 2019

I Want to Read This Because it’s about a witch going to a local trades college – that in itself is a pretty interesting premise, and mix in the difficulties around her parentage and the arrival of someone who might cause the FMC a little trouble, and yeah, I’m intrigued.

The Witch of Wall Street
M.J. Etkind

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: March 25th, 2025

I Want to Read This Because it sounds fun! Firstly, look at that cover! Secondly, there’s a witch and a Wizard of Small Miracles, and a quest across NYC…I am definitely drawn to this!

The Shadow Cabinet
Juno Dawson

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: June 20th, 2023

I Want to Read This Because I loved Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, and it’s taken me way, way too long to get to the second book! I think I need to make this a priority for 2026, as I really do need to find out what happens next to this group of witches.

Five witchy books on my TBR! As always, I’d love to hear your recommendations, and if you want to take part in Monday Moods, just drop a link to your post below or check out the page for more information.
