Monday Moods: Horror

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

Sticking with the Halloween/Blogtober theme, this week we’re taking a look at horror. One of my favourite genres, as you may know by now. I love horror – I love how broad and diverse it is, how you can pick a group of horror books and find they’re all wildly different. Now, I better stop before this turns into a love letter to horror, but here are just 5 of the many, many horror books currently on my TBR.

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Horror

Maria the Wanted and the Legacy of the Keeers
V. Castro

Genre: Horror – Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: November 28th, 2018

I Want to Read This Because I know V. Castro is a good writer, this involves vampires, and I heard a lot about this book when I started getting more involved in the online horror community. It’s been on my TBR for quite a long while, so fingers crossed I get to it soon!

Tell Me I’m Worthless
Alison Rumfitt

Genre: Gothic Horror
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: October 28th, 2021

I Want to Read This Because a friend suggested this to me, and his suggestions are typically spot on. I do think I’m going to enjoy this one – I love books that take Gothic and do something a bit different with it, and this one sounds intriguing.

Agony’s Lodestone
Laura Keating

Genre: Supernatural Horror
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 8th, 2023

I Want to Read This Because doesn’t that cover just grab you? Horror is one of the genres where the novella can be really, really effective, and this is from a publisher I completely and utterly trust (Tenebrous Press), so I feel like this is going to be a strong read.

Snake-Eater
T. Kingfisher

Genre: Horror – Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: December 1st, 2025

I Want to Read This Because I will read anything the very talented T. Kingfisher puts out – I’ve only read a couple of books from her, but I’m absolutely keen to read more!

Unshod, Cackling, and Naked
Tamika Thompson

Genre: Horror – Suspense
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: January 26th, 2023

I Want to Read This Because this has sat on my TBR for too long. I read an extract of this book and really enjoyed it, so was absolutely keen to pick it up. However, reading challenges haven’t allowed much room for short stories! Will need to try and get to it next year (and I’m doing less challenges to hopefully allow myself some room for non-challenge books!)

Are you a horror reader? Got any recommendations or want to share the horror books on your TBR? Or is it a genre you tend to stay away from, but maybe have occasional dips around this time of year – I’d love to hear from you too!
