2025 Reading Challenges Update #12

This is my final update for the 2025 Reading Challenges! I didn’t do as well as I would have liked, though I did manage to complete some challenges and some of the bonus prompts. My next challenges post will be looking at my 2026 challenges and highlighting some of the books I’ll be reading for this.

Books Read

An American In Paris – I Got Rhythm – Featuring/about a dancer OR a carefree character

I enjoyed Dancers of the Dawn, and look forward to the next book in the series! It’s a lot less romantasy than I expected from the marketing, I would definitely put this more firmly in the fantasy category, and recommend it if you’re looking for YA Fantasy with a strong female lead.

Meet Me in St Louis – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Christmas or winter themed

Rather than going for one of my many Christmas romance books, for this I read Cold Snap, which has been on my TBR for a long time now. It was…a little less than okay? Some interesting ideas but could have been executed much better.

Repo! The Genetic Opera – 21st Century Cure – Dystopia

I listened to the latest in The Hunger Games for this one, and quite enjoyed Sunrise on the Reaping! A good addition to the series, imho.

This challenge was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the prompts for this. Although I’m not doing this one again in 2026, it’s absolutely one I’d like to return to in a future year.

Bonus: Open Space

Black Klansman had been on my TBR for a while, and felt like a good pick for this bonus prompt. I really enjoyed this challenge, too, and it really helped me read more non-fiction than I have in ages! If you’re trying to read more non-fiction yourself, I absolutely suggest taking part, and you can find the 2026 challenge on Storygraph. Although I’m not doing it this year, it’s another one I’d like to pick up again in the future.

Books Read

A book with autism representation

I went into Wish You Were Her with high hopes, but unfortunately this ended up being one of my worst reads of 2025. It was just too messy, with a lot of issues that should have been smoothed out in earlier edits.

A book with a main character with a disability

On the other hand, I really enjoyed Lap Dance! For Dystopia. It’s a really good dystopian novella, with a sweet relationship at its centre.

As for this particular challenge, I think it’s my favourite from 2025! I have been keeping an eye to see if the host would do this or other diversity challenges again, but it doesn’t seem so. Hopefully for 2027 instead, as I really would like to do another one.

2025 SFF Title Challenge
14/16 (+2) Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

empire

I am still working my way through The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire. It’s interesting and clever, but a little bit of a slog. I was really hoping to get this finished by the end of the year, but it’s taken me much longer than I would have liked to work through it!

Read

thorn

I really enjoyed The Path of Thorns! It’s a great gothic fantasy, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

siege

The Siege of Burning Grass was an interesting read, but recently I’ve found quite a few of the books I’ve been reading have been about war in some way or another! The downside to this one was that I don’t think the book was as tight or clear as it could have been.

Like the non-fiction challenge, I really appreciate that this challenge allowed me to read more SFF – fantasy is one of my favourite genres, while sci-fi I find to be more hit or miss, but I’m pleased with this challenge and definitely enjoyed it, even if I didn’t complete it!

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
16/24 (0) Prompts Completed

No progress on this one, so it rolls over into 2026. I…really hope I do manage to finish this finally! I might have to review the books I’m using for some of the prompts and see if I can shift things around maybe.

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, All That Remains, A Discovery of Witches

If you took part in any 2025 reading challenges, I’d love to hear how you did! Have you changed anything for 2026 based on last year? What sort of challenges do you enjoy doing?
