For Libbie, things aren’t great. Her boss doesn’t listen to any of her ideas, her boyfriend is doing nothing all summer except lazing about, and her parents may dote on her sister, but definitely not on Libbie. Her relief comes in the form of a weekly cocktail club, and it’s here she can relax with her friends and talk through life’s problems, as well as getting courage and compliments.

When one of the cocktail club members dies, however, Libbie and the other women discover witches are real, and their friends’ magic has passed to them. For Libbie, this means almost instant changes – a dash of courage, which sees her transform her life almost overnight.

I enjoyed this enough to want to read the next one. It’s very light and sweet, and though there’s an element of romance between Libbie and local lawyer Ethan, it’s not a romance book, and this part is kept very much at the sides. A lot of the book is focused on Libbie navigating the changes in her life, after she quits both her job and boyfriend.

Libbie was a sweet character, who starts off as a bit of a pushover, goes through a change (not the change, though that’s a topic of conversation for a few of the characters!) that sees her standing up for herself more. More and more, I really appreciate seeing books with a focus on older characters, and I love when typically coming of age elements are used for middle aged characters. Chase does it quite well here, and it makes for a sweet, refreshing read. Importantly, Libbie is also a mother, with two teenagers, and it’s another element that makes the book and characters refreshing.

It’s not brilliantly written, and there is a bit too much repetition, but on the whole I enjoyed my experience with this and look forward to revisiting the Midlife Magic Cocktail Club.
