Let’s Talk Bookish: Participating in Discussion Posts

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted with Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Book Nook Bits has hosted since April 2022, with Dini at Dini Panda Reads as co-host from February 2025.

LTB has now changed to a monthly prompt! As I’ve been so busy recently, I haven’t had time to go searching for other discussion memes or even think of my own for the other Fridays, but hopefully I’ll be able to get caught up somewhat over the summer and get some stuff up for Fridays. In the meantime…

Let’s Talk Bookish 10th July:
Participating in Discussion Posts

Prompts: How do you prepare your posts when you’re writing a discussion post—do you have an outline or do you usually start writing in advance and work on it slowly over time? Do you prefer to have many prompts (like LTB), or do you prefer one question that you can take in whichever direction you prefer (like Fantasy with Friends by Unbound Pages)? Do you think weekly discussions are better, or quarterly discussions (like Literary Inbox by 24yabookblog)?

I write in advance – I try and keep blog posts at least a week in advance, but sometimes that slips, and at other times – especially if I’ve had a bit more time – I do get more ahead than that! But no outline – I like the freedom that writing here gives me, and I like just being able to work off prompts or work through the thoughts in my head!

I like both approaches, but I find the multiple prompts incredibly useful! It gives me something specific to talk about as well as a good ‘order’, without it ending up a little all over the place. Though LTB is the only discussion post I take part in right now, I’ll be checking out the others listed here and see how I get on with them. Maybe if this question was asked in 6 months I’d have a different answer! But right now my main comparison is LTB and my own ‘topic’ posts that I do now and then.

I think it truly depends. I like having weekly discussion posts, but I admit I can’t always keep up! LTB switching to monthly is a good change because it gives flexibility to those of us taking part – we can do one post a month, or themed linked posts throughout the month – and if it eases the pressure on the hosts, that’s an excellent thing! I haven’t tried more quarterly ones really so that’s something I’ll have to try and see!

Do you take part in discussion posts? Do you have particular favourites you’d like to share? I am looking out for new ones, as I really do enjoy doing LTB, so if there’s any you’d like to let me know about, just drop a link to the comments (to the host or your own post(s)!).
