November 11: Do you use your local library?
(Mikaela @ Mikaela Reads)
Prompts: Do you have a local library you go to often? Does your school/did your school have a library? What are your favorite things about libraries? Are there certain books you borrow from your local library more or less often than others?
I do have a local library that is very close, but I don’t use it! Only because I have a large number of books here already to get through, and I know if I get a card and go in, I’m going to end up overloading my TBR even more. My school did have a library, and I remember spending lunchtimes there, scanning the bookshelves and picking up my next book. It was only small, and we couldn’t spend long in there, but I loved when I did get a chance.
I used to go to my local library very regularly as a teenager. Almost as soon as I could walk there by myself, I found comfort in browsing bookshelves and picking up more books to read. The books I tended to borrow most were in the Teen/Young Adult section, ‘Teen’ being the equivalent to Middle Grade. I remember it was right at the edge of the Adult books, and if you turned slightly away from the very small Teen & YA shelf, you were staring at books by Virginia Andrews.
The other books I remember getting there were the first Stephen King novels I read, Discworld, and I Am Legend. When I was younger and still used the Children’s section – which was in the basement and a really nice, quiet space – I picked up a lot of Horrible Histories from there.
Something I also really appreciated about my local library – their selection of DVDs. These kept me entertained when I needed it and couldn’t afford to pick up DVDs of shows I’d never before watched, and it was access to the library that allowed me to rewatch Heroes, but also try shows for the first time like Doctor Who, Supernatural and Torchwood.
What about you? Do you use your local library?
