2024 Reading Challenges Update #1

Well, we are one month into 2024 – how is your reading going? Are you enjoying the books you’ve read so far this year? I’m happy with how much I’ve read, but one book took me so long to finish Storygraph kept telling me I was one book behind! Hopefully though I can get through my next books a bit quicker.

2024 Reading Challenges

Goal: 5/70

Disney Reading Challenge 2024
2/40 (+2) Prompt Completed

Read

Belle – Well, Some People Use Their Imagination – a fantasy book

I just finished Six Crimson Cranes, and I absolutely adored it! It’s a really fun YA Fantasy Romance, and it even had me tearing up at the end! Not something that happens often.

Peter Pan – Go on! Go back and grow up! But I’m warning you, once you’re grown up you can never come back – a YA or children’s book

My Throat an Open Grave is another YA I thoroughly enjoyed this year – it’s a nice blend of paranormal romance, fantasy and horror, and manages to tackle some pretty intriguing themes.

Books to Read: Gay Aliens and Queer Folk, The Matzah Ball, The First Days

Musicals Reading Challenge 2024
1/24 (+2) Prompt Completed

Currently Reading

Grease – We Go Together – A book set in a school

This is my current audio read, and I’m really enjoying The Tenth Girl. It’s intriguing, creepy, and feels like there’s more going on beneath the surface than we’re privy to.

Read

Les Misérables – Do You Hear the People Sing A book featuring a rebellion or revolution

This prompt offered me the perfect opportunity to read a book that’s been on my TBR for a long time – Black Spartacus. Definitely learnt a lot about the history of Haiti, and about Toussaint Louverture, but this book was incredibly dry to read with a lot of names, dates, and battles.

Books to Read: Shakespeare, In the Shadow of Queens, Chasing the Duke

Avengers Challenge!
0/6 Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

Thor – Anything related to Norse mythology

I really like these prompts – there’s 6 prompts followed by a bunch of bonus prompts, and each has two options (the other one for this is ‘anything with a himbo’). I’ve not long started reading The Valkyrie, but I’m really enjoying it so far.

Books to Read: Blitz Spirit, Goldilocks, The Science of Marvel

Barbie Reading Challenge
1/17 (+1) Prompts Completed

Read

Dance the Night – A romance book

I really wanted to like Welcome Me to Willoughby Close, and I was hoping through this I’d maybe find another romance series to dig into. Instead, I was left feeling a bit disappointed. I am definitely noticing with contemporary romance I lean more towards rom-com type books, and this was just didn’t hit the right spots for me.

Books to Read: Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up, Say You’ll Be My Jaan, Ace of Spades

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
12/24 (0) Prompts Completed

Yeah, no shifting on this one at the moment – it’s one that can be completed at any point, but I’ll come back to it when I’ve read some more from the other challenges I have on at the moment.

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, Hexed

How did your first month go for reading? I definitely didn’t read as much as I would have liked for the challenges, largely because Black Spartacus took me so long to read. Hopefully I’ll clear more prompts now in Feb!
