Volume 5.
How I hate you. How I love you. How you put our little family and the surrounding cast through so, so much, with barely a gap to rest.
In my original review I apparently said there’s less truly emotional moments? So apparently there were some characters I didn’t connect with as deeply the first time round, I guess. Or maybe I’ve just grown up a bit more. Could be I’m reading these much closer together, so I’m remembering better what happened in previous volumes.
The Rebellion offer Hazel to the highest bidder, looking for a cure for The Will draws Gwendolyn, Sophie and The Brand to a hunt for dragon sperm, Marko and Prince Robot IV search for their missing children, and Ghus comes into his own and really shines here, plus there’s death. Of course. For who, I’m not going to say, but, apparently unlike last time (seriously, wtf past me?), I was hit hard.
Truly, this series goes from strength to strength. There’s still some wtf’ery going on here, but it feels slightly toned down from previous volumes (slightly. There is a huge dragon dick involved in this one). This volume manages to effectively lay the groundwork for the next one, keep you totally hooked for the emotional beats, and contains an exceptionally fitting send off for one character in particular. As if I haven’t said it enough already, this series is just consistently great.
