Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Was Excited to Get But Still Haven’t Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This list could be a whole lot longer than 10. There are so many books I was super excited to get my hands on, whether it’s because I got a copy myself, had it as a present or got it approved as an arc. Sometimes, I think I hesitate with these more squeal-inducting books, because what if I didn’t love it as much as I think I will? Still, I will get there eventually. And hopefully I enjoy all of them as much as I’m excited for them.

Top Ten Books I Was Super Excited to Get My Hands on but Still Haven’t Read

Gwen & Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: May 11th, 2023

I haven’t actually read any of Croucher’s work yet, but this one seems like something I’ll really like. I actually pre-ordered this, too, that keen I was to read it. And I…haven’t got to it yet. I really like twists on Arthurian legends, too. Let’s hope this lives up to expectations.

A Radical Act of Free Magic by H. G. Parry

Genre: Historical Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: July 20th, 2023

This is not the only one in this list where I read one book in the series and knew immediately I had to read the second. I loved the first of The Shadow Histories, and I am really looking forward to this one. I just haven’t had the opportunity to get it right to the top of my TBR (yet).

Cinder Ella by S.T. Lynn

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: June 24th, 2016

As soon as I saw this mentioned on Twitter, I knew I had to read it – this is a Cinderella retelling that makes Ella a Black trans woman, forced back into the closest after her father’s death. How could I not be interested in this one?

Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 23rd, 2024

So this is one of the more recent ones on this list, but this enters my “we are so lucky right now” list of books for 2024 – and there’s a few! This year is shaping up to be absolutely excellent for fantasy, and I could probably do a whole Top 10 on 2024 books I’m really excited about but haven’t yet read. Still…I need to get to this one soon!

A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: March 28th, 2006

I don’t know how this passed me by for so long, but as soon as I heard about it I knew I needed to read it. When I got it, I actually picked up the first 4 books in the series, so I really do need to get a move on with it.

Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt

Genre: Horror
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: May 7th, 2019

After reading Hex, I knew I wanted to see more from Heuvelt, and grabbed this soon as I saw it on offer for Kindle. But I kind of keep forgetting I do have it – need to make sure I remember this one when I’m next looking at books for the reading challenges I’m currently doing.

The Hemlock Queen by Hannah F. Whitten

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 9th, 2024

Another relatively new one – when I read The Foxglove King, I was left eagerly anticipating the next instalment. It’s one of my favourite fantasy reads of the last few years, and I’m still incredibly excited for book 2, I just haven’t quite managed to get to it yet.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: November 5th, 2019

Something I love about some romance series’ is you can pretty much pick up the series from any point, as often each book focuses on a different couple. I read Take a Hint, absolutely loved it, and was so excited when I nabbed a copy of this, it just hasn’t quite made it to the top of the TBR yet.

Only When It’s Us by Chloe Liese

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: March 27th, 2020

I actually read book 6 in this series first, but loved it so, so much I immediately picked up the ebook of book 1. This is definitely a series I really want to read, and I suspect one I’ll very much enjoy from how much I loved If Only You. Just haven’t had the chance yet.

A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: February 20th, 2024

I could have also gone for We Free the Stars but I really could do a whole top ten on sequel books I still haven’t read, so I went for this instead. I did pick this up because a) vampires but b) Hafsah Faizal, and after reading We Hunt the Flame, this is an author I really, really like.

As always, if you have read any of these I’d love to hear from you. And let me know what books on your TBR you were really excited for, but for various reasons haven’t quite got to yet.

  1. A Hunger Like No Other is so good!! I really hope you enjoy it but it is pretty different to romances now. It’s an older book and it kind of shows. I’m obsessed with that series though. So good.

  2. I got Tempest of Tea as soon as it released and I still haven’t read it yet cos I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed reviews for it and now I’m scared to be disappointed 😂 I love some of these books you’ve listed though—Hibbert’s and Liese’s books are faves and I really enjoyed Lin’s book too. I hope you love these whenever you get to them.

    1. Yeah, I definitely avoid reviews before I’ve actually read a book. I might skim them before requesting/buying, but not between getting it and reading it. Always find it fun to go back and read them though.

  3. OMG A Radical Act of Free Magic is amazing! Honestly that series is like my Roman Empire I think about it that often and I think Parry did such a great job with the ending. I also enjoyed A Tempest of Tea, not as much as the authors previous series, but it’s still great 🙂
