#5OnMyTBR: Contemporary

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook  and you can learn more about it here. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

‘Contemporary’ is a really interesting topic for this week’s #5OnMyTBR – it can encompass such a broad range of different genres, and because of the nature of what is ‘contemporary’, it’s one of the few ‘tags’ that’s constantly evolving. All it means, of course, is that a book is set in the present day, so pretty much anything can fall under the contemporary umbrella. The first two books today are from my reading challenges, so I should be reading them relatively soon, while the rest are books I currently own, and will hopefully get to sooner rather than later.

#5OnMyTBR July 1st: Contemporary

Four Eids and a Funeral by Faridah Àbíké-ÍyímídéAdiba Jaigirdar

Genre: Romance
Age: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Published: June 4th, 2024

Why I Want to Read: For starters, that title hooked me right in. Secondly, the cover is beautiful. The plot as a whole sounds really intriguing and sweet, too, with Said returning home and something between Said and Tiwa that means they’re no longer friends, but Tiwa in the dark about why. I’m really excited to dig into this.

Tell Me I’m Worthless by Alison Rumfitt

Genre: Horror
Age: Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: October 28th, 2021

Why I Want to Read: I’m really hoping I get to this one before the end of the year. I heard of this from a friend who always gives the best book recommendations, so I’m confident I’ll quite like this. Not to mention the gothic, abandoned house elements are kind of catnip to me.

Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola

Genre: Romance
Age: Adult
Format: Audiobook
Published: July 5th, 2022

Why I Want to Read: This instantly grabbed my attention when I saw it on Audible, and I snagged it straight away. The title stood out, but the fact the focus is a Black British woman and it involves a fake relationship were what really sealed the deal – I feel like I read a lot of US romances, so it’s always great to check out British ones!

You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron

Genre: Horror
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: June 20th, 2023

Why I Want to Read: Bayron has become one of my favourite writers – she has such a great style, and she focuses on Black queer characters. The moment I heard about her slasher novel set at a camp, I was so excited. It’s one of those books constantly at the front of my mind, and I’m always trying to keep an eye out for which prompts on my reading challenges I can match it to.

We Could Be Heroes by Philip Ellis

Genre: Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: June 6th, 2024

Why I Want to Read: Look at that cover! It’s so cute! This is a gay romcom with a split timeline that, in the present day, features an American movie star and British bookseller. The 1948 storyline features a married couple, Charles and Iris, who create the superhero franchise that brings the present day couple together, but, more importantly, they’re both queer, married to protect each other. How could I not be intrigued?

As always, if you’ve read any of these I’d love to hear what you thought. And let me know if any of the books here are on your TBR!
