Monday Moods: Monsters

Monday Moods is a new bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

Ah, monsters. They’re everywhere in books, from the humanoid not-quite-dead like zombies and vampires, to creatures more otherworldly. They’re a focus of interest in certain areas of non-fiction, and outright love interests in certain corners of the romance genre. They fascinate us, and they definitely fascinate me, so it wasn’t too hard to find a few monster titles on my TBR.

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Monsters

The Monster MASH
Angie Fox

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: August 28th, 2012

I Want to Read This Because it just sounds fun! What’s not to love about the premise – an army of gods, and a doctor assigned to a MASH camp with a variety of different monsters surrounding her. I’m really excited to finally dig into this.

Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction
Lisa Kröger, Melanie R. Anderson

Genre: Nonfiction – Horror – Biography
Age: Adult
Format: Hardback
Published: September 17th, 2019

I Want to Read This Because I love diving into the history of my favourite genres, and this particularly highlights the women who, as the title suggests, pioneered genres that have come to be seen as more ‘male dominated’ (despite the fact they never actually have been).

Kayaks, Kisses, & Monsters
Ashleigh Stevens

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: June 18th, 2020

I Want to Read This Because there may or may not be actual monsters present in this book (and from the sounds of it there isn’t actually one?) but I’m drawn to it because of the possibility of monsters, and I kind of want to find out if there are in the book!

Everyday Monsters
Travis Betz

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 20th, 2021

I Want to Read This Because it just sounds like quite a lot of fun, involving Derek who believes monsters were responsible for the murders his parents have been convicted of, and Paxton, who was reborn from the dead a hundred years before. They end up sharing a body. Why wouldn’t I want to read this?

The Science of Monsters: The Truth about Zombies, Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, and Other Legendary Creatures
Meg Hafdahl, Kelly Florence

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: April 20th, 2021

I Want to Read This Because I really enjoyed The Science of Women in Horror, and I love books that explore films in this sort of way. I think this is going to be a pretty fun read.

I’d love to hear about some of your favourite monster books – do you like reading about monsters in fiction? Have any particular non-fiction favourites you think tackle the topic well? Or maybe you have a favourite monster you can never resist you’d like to share?
