Topic: Books I’d Love to See Adapted – Fantasy Edition!

My last post about this seemed fairly well received, so I thought I’d dive in again with some books I’d love to see either on the big or small screen, focusing this time on Fantasy. I absolutely love this genre, and I especially love seeing something new done in it. YA is really killing it in Fantasy right now, and I know 9 times out of 10, when I pick up a YA Fantasy, I’m going to have a great time.

Iron Widow – Xiran Jay Zhao

My Review

This is by far one of my favourite books of 2021, and it would be amazing to see this as a film. It’s already cinematic in the writing style. The themes and ideas Zhao tackles in Iron Widow are quite dark, and there’s some fantastic battle scenes in there. This would be great as a film but a TV series could give it a lot more room for the excellent characterisation in the novel.

The Court of Miracles – Kester Grant

My Review

This one is easy to picture as an Amazon or Netflix series. There’s plenty of action, intrigue and politics going on to keep people entertained. While the core story focuses on Eponine, there’s a lot of other stuff going on in the background and around her to fill out multiple episodes.

A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians – H.G. Parry

My Review

Okay, maybe a big part of me just wants to see more Historical Fantasy series’ on screen. But this would make a good series – a little bit of a slow burn, but style-wise it’s really got an excellent setting. It would be great to see how this could be filmed, with the combination of magical fantasy elements combined with the historical setting and the various politics and revolutions taking place.

We Hunt the Flame – Hafsah Faizal

My Review

What I wouldn’t give to see this as a film! Faizal’s book is a fantastic journey across settings that would simply look amazing on screen. It’s an original story that focuses on different characters, characters who all have shades of grey. It’s compelling as hell, and deserves to be alongside the likes of Witcher and Wheel of Time.

Spin the Dawn – Elizabeth Lim

My Review

I absolutely devoured this book, and it fully deserves an adaptation. A Mulan retelling, Lim really gives us a beautiful story about a girl who dreams of being the greatest tailor in the land. She sets out on a quest, so there’s plenty of moving parts to keep watchers entertained, and some of the crucial moments would look absolutely stunning on screen.

Shades of Magic – V.E. Schwab

This trilogy is probably one of my favourite trilogies. Schwab has fantastic world building, and really interesting dynamics between characters. Definitely would make for a great TV series, especially with the travelling between different versions of London.
