We are at the end of another month and it’s back to school season! August has been a lot, but with us leaving the summer hopefully things will settle down again soon. How was your August? Did you get a lot of reading done? I feel like I kind of did but also kind of didn’t – had a couple of longer books I’ve been reading recently, so it’ll be interesting to see how this update pans out.

Moana – How Far I’ll Go – A book with a adventure/journey
I’ve not long started The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi but I’m really enjoying it already! It’s a really strong start and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Read
Inside Out – emotional headquarters – an emotional read
I wasn’t a big fan of A Terrible Kindness. Full reasons why will be in my review, but it just left a bit of a bad taste.
Ratatouille – Paris – a book set in a capital city
And similarly, there were things I thought were just done a bit poorly in The Duke & I, which was a shame. But I’m still glad I finally read this and I think I’ll continue with the series.

Books to Read: The Rose Daughter, You Say Potato, Under the Dome

Death – A book that explores themes of death/mortality
I’m still listening to Selling Dead People’s Things on Audiobook, and it’s really good. It’s largely memoir, but it’s told in such an interesting way and it’s all about the world of vintage, antiques and related. Some really funny moments, but a lot of sad, poignant ones too.

Read
The Hierophant – an OwnVoices LGBTQ+ book
I was really excited to read Hummingbird, and I was not disappointed. It was sitting on my TBR for a while, so as soon as I saw this prompt I took it as the perfect opportunity. It’s good. Maybe a little too many characters for my tastes, but a solid horror book all the same.
The Hermit – A book that caused you to contemplate something in your reality
For this one I read Not That Bad – not an easy read. A very good essay collection, but difficult at times. But I think it’s one that if you can read it, you should, especially as it has such a wide range of experiences, voices, and styles.

Books to Read: As Far As You’ll Take Me, The Hollow Kind, Perilous Times
Netflix Movies & TV Shows

Read
Candy Jar – Enemies to Lovers
I was left feeling a bit meh towards My Own Worst Enemy. It started off interesting enough, but it ended up dragging on a bit too long.
Don’t Look Up – Involves current issues
This one was Not That Bad, mentioned above.
Bridgerton – Royalty
I think this was my favourite book of the last month – The Foxglove King was the kind of book that ended up being right up my street, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had kind of Folk of the Air vibes, but less fae. Definitely recommended from me!

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, Hexed
Pretty happy with the last month, and think I’ve made good progress on my challenges! For the time being I think I’m going to focus more on Disney and Tarot, as those two finish at the end of the year while Netflix doesn’t. Though it also depends what books catch my eye when I’m looking for what to read next! There’s no way I’ll finish any of these by the end of December – that would be a bit too ambitious! – but I am excited to see how far I get.
