It’s been a while since I did one of these, so these seemed like a good time to dig back in and see what else awaits on the TBR. We’re currently up to December 2013, and it’s interesting to see what my sort of ‘tastes’ were then and the kind of books I was hoping to (eventually) read.

139. Burning Your Boats: The Collected Short Stores
Angela Carter

Genre: Fantasy
Published: January 1st, 1995
I really liked the Bloody Chamber collection of Carter’s works, and it’s likely reading that which made me add this to the ‘want to read’. Definitely still one I really want to check out.

140. Brave New Worlds
Edited by John Joseph Adams

Genre: Dystopian
Published: January 2nd, 2010
I do like these kind of anthologies and there are a lot of names here I recognise and like, but I feel like there’s already quite a few I still haven’t read and would likely get to before something like this, but I’m mindful that this might be something I do pick up way down the line – for now, though, I’m not in a rush to get to it. It’s hard to read dystopian fiction when the world feels more and more like a dystopia.

141. Saffron and Brimstone: Strange Stories
Elizabeth Hand

Genre: Fantasy
Published: December 12th, 2006
This sounds interesting enough, and I can’t see any reason I wouldn’t enjoy or would avoid this collection of short stories. Collections can be a really interesting way to see how you feel about an author’s work, too, and I find they can often lead me to read more. So I think this is one I want to check out.

142. Subject Seven
James A. Moore

Genre: Sci-Fi – Dystopia

Meh. The whole plot for this reads as a little cliché at this point, and not something I’m particularly keen to really explore.

143. The Epicure
H.R. Howland

Genre: Horror
Published: December 6th, 2005
Nothing here particularly grabs me. I feel like horror is one of those genres I’ve become more specific in, and I know, really, what I like and what I don’t. Sometimes it means the horror choices on these are pretty easy. This one doesn’t grab me, and I don’t think I’ll be interested in it any time soon.

I always think these are a success if I’ve got rid of two or more books, so I am pretty happy with how these turned out! I’m still chipping away at the way-too-large want to read shelf, but I am, very slowly, reducing it, at least. Have you read any of these? If so, do you agree or disagree with my choices?
