2024 Reading Challenges Update #8

We’re into another month, and it feels like we’re all too quickly heading towards the end of the year! This is when I start looking at my reading challenges and maybe panicking slightly, but it’s also when I start planning out my challenges for the following year – not completely, but from now I’ll be giving a little more thought as to what to include in my Musicals Reading Challenge for 2025. I’ve had some ideas so far, but I want to try and make sure I’m not pulling songs from too many of the same musicals as last year! If you want to take part, keep an eye out for it on Storygraph, or look out on my blog as I’ll be posting the details here as part of Blogmas.

Goal: 53/70 (+6)

Disney Reading Challenge 2024
14/40 (0) Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

Jiminy Cricket – Good piece of wood too – a book with a bit of spice

For this one, I’m currently reading Princess Broken. I’m not that far into it, but the spice elements are coming into play, with the FMC having four ‘devoted’ love interests – the FMC also happens to be Anastasia Romanov. It’s fun so far.

Woody – You’re My Favourite Deputy – re-read your favourite book

Quite a while ago, I realised I really wanted to reread The Vampire Chronicles series, especially after seeing the TV series for Interview with the Vampire, so it’s my current audiobook read. And I’m thoroughly loving revisiting Louis & Lestat via the book!

Books to Read: The First Days, Four Eids and a Funeral, Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Musicals Reading Challenge 2024
14/24 (+2) Prompts Completed

Read

Moulin Rouge – Come What May – Forbidden Love

Sapphires and Secrets was a fun, enjoyable read, and it was interesting to dip my toe into this kind of romance. I’m definitely interested in reading the next one in the series.

Hair – Aquarius – Set in or about the 1960s

I thought I had more non-fiction books about the 60s, but apparently not, so I read novel-in-verse Keep A’Livin’ for this prompt instead. It follows a young Black girl coming of age in 1960s America, witnessing the rise of the Civil Rights movement, while her mother worries over all her children, but especially her. It’s interesting, but ultimately I found it to not be my cup of tea.

Books to Read: Shakespeare, Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, the Fool and the Dead, You’re History

Avengers Challenge!
6/6, 4/5 Bonus (+1) Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

Falcon/Iron Patriot/War Machine – anything with a solider – more points if it’s post 1970’s

For this, I went with the Stranger Things tie-in novel, Darkness on the Edge of Town, which focuses on Jim Hopper telling Eleven about his life as a NYPD cop, dealing with a serial killer. It’s okay. I wanted to give this a chance despite not being a huge fan of the first Stranger Things novel, and so far it’s a mixed bag. But it is my last book for this challenge, and it’ll be great to complete this one.

Read

Ant-Man – Comedy, magicians, or shape-shifting

I finally finished A Radical Act of Free Magic, and absolutely loved it. It’s a great book and generally a brilliant duology.

Books to Read: None!

Barbie Reading Challenge
10/17, 1/1 Bonus (+1) Prompts Completed

Currently Reading

Forever & Again – I’ll always be there, forever and again – Your comfort book you go back to again and again

I don’t often reread books, but I was mulling over this prompt and decided it was a good opportunity for Interview with the Vampire, which in turn also meant I could use it for another challenge as noted above!

Read

BARBIE – A book title that has the letters B-A-R-B-I-E in it! There needs to be two B’s

I struggled for this one for quite a while until I realised I had The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes just waiting to go on audio. I really enjoyed this, and it really adds that bit more to the overall story of The Hunger Games. Plus, Santino Fontana’s narration is really excellent.

Books to Read: Ace of Spades, A Hunger Like No Other, Love That Journey for Me

Netflix Movies & TV Shows
14/24 (+1) Prompts Completed

Read

Never Have I Ever – Coming of Age – book with a coming of age storyline or themes

Yes, it finally happened – I made some (slight) progress on my Netflix Challenge! This one might just have to slip into next year though, but so far I’m okay with that. For this one, I read Hexed, a really great Contemporary Paranormal YA about a teenage girl who develops witch powers. Definitely recommend, especially for teen readers!

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, All That Remains

I don’t think I’ve done too bad this month. Right now, I’m hoping to finish off the Avengers! and Barbie challenges, and I’m hoping I can actually complete my Musicals one before the end of the year, though I don’t think I’ll complete the Disney one. Again. Next year I am definitely reconsidering how many challenges I’m doing – for 2024, I took on too many, so next year I’m going to keep the Disney and Musicals one (as I do create the Musicals one), and try and finish the Netflix challenge, rather than adding any more. I want to leave myself a little more room for some mood reading too, as I’ve struggled to fit in some books this year I really have wanted to read.

If you’ve been doing Reading Challenges, I’d love to hear how you’re getting along, and as always if you have read any of these, please link me to your reviews or let me know your thoughts!
