In You’re History, Lesley Chow highlights the female artists who have impacted pop, drawing attention to an overlooked area of cultural criticism. Right from the start, Chow examines the kind of artists who are revered and celebrated, and discusses how others – often women – are overlooked, their talent discounted and perhaps derided because of their ‘strangeness’ or simply because they’re making pop music.
You’re History celebrates and highlights the contributions of Kate Bush, Taylor Swift, Chaka Khan, Neneh Cherry, Azealia Banks and more, detailing their careers and how they burst onto the music scene, and what makes these women unique. Chow has a clear appreciation for pop and all that it can offer, and she details these women’s careers with a keen ear. Chow explains her reasons for classing these women as ‘strange’, often because of the way they – in big and small ways – defy convention, or lean into and utilize it.
I don’t think this is for those who might consider themselves die hard pop critics – for me, there was a lot of new-to-me information here, including a few artists, which people who enjoy looking deeper into pop might be more familiar with. But it’s an enjoyable, enlightening read for a more casual audience, and one I really enjoyed.
