Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!
Superheroes seemed like a good pick for this week, as tomorrow is National Superhero Day! I avoided graphic novels for the purposes of this, and only have two Marvel books on the list, but two with very interesting characters.
This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Superheroes
Not My Time
Jessica Salina

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: 19th January, 2023
I Want to Read This Because this feels like it might be a good twist on superheroes – Rory is saved by a superhero, but she’s shaken when she hears about his death. Only…he’s not actually dead. And might just be her best friend, who also happens to be in love with her. I’m looking forward to digging into this!
We Could Be Heroes
PJ / Philip Ellis

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: 6th June, 2024
I Want to Read This Because it sounds incredibly sweet, fun and poignant! Although this more of the actor-playing-superhero variety, it still fits. Told across two timelines, this is a romance about a movie star and British bookseller, and the writer-illustrator duo who created the superhero franchise that eventually brings said star and bookseller together. But in 1948, the duo – a married couple – are both queer, at a point when homosexuality is illegal. I’m hoping this balances the tears and laughter well.
Model Actress Whatever
Kim Newman

Genre: Alternate History
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: 12th May, 2026
I Want to Read This Because it’s (apparently) a “bitingly satirical story of superheroism, soap opera and alternative reality” from Kim Newman, so yes sign me up! I love Newman’s work, and this one has also been compared to Wild Cards, which again, love that book.
Captain Marvel: Shadow Code
Gilly Segal

Genre: Sci-Fi
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: 17th October, 2023
I Want to Read This Because it’s Captain Marvel! I do like Captain Marvel, and it’s interesting to explore Marvel novels and see what they do with the characters.
Loki: Journey into Mystery
Katherine Locke

Genre: Fantasy Sci-Fi
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: 19th October, 2023
I Want to Read This Because it’s everyone’s favourite God of Lies! I love Marvel’s take on Loki, and this one adapts from the graphic novel series. As with the Captain Marvel book, I’m excited to see a different take on the character.
As always, if you have any recommendations or suggestions for me (or any particular prompts you’d like to see in the future!), let me know!
